You know, this place is really special to me. I'm a member of various forums around the web, but there's only one place that feels like home, and that's right here on the Porch, in the Traditionals forum. We have an amazing wealth of knowledge here, but that can be said of a lot of places. What makes this place so special, in my opinion, is the QUALITY of our members! So often we see people hosting giveaways, sneakily sending knives back and forth to one another, sending good thoughts and prayers, and just generally exhibiting kindness and thoughtfulness. I hope there are more places like this around, but I've certainly never come across any!
So let's get this on track here with a little knife related content...
Today's lunch hour started like any other. I left work, drove the 5 miles home to grab some lunch and enjoy some peace and quiet, and check the mail.
Hey, what's this? I got a letter from our own Cory Hess! Ahh, it's a thank you note for a knife I sent him from the GAW I hosted a few days back. Look, he even sent me a Jamaican half-penny! How neat is that?!?
THANK YOU Cory! I'm so glad you liked the knife!
Already tickled, I peaked back in to the dark recesses of my mailbox, where our slightly mischevious mail carrier often likes to jam items. Ahh, look! Two more packages!
Uh oh, the first one is from Point Roberts, Washington, sent by some guy by the name of Campagna...
This one I was anticipating. I had sent Charlie an Ulster swell center jack a few weeks ago when he expressed some interest in it. I just sent it off, and the terms of our trade were that I trusted him to send something pointy back to me.
The contents of this package about made me pass out.
Look at that. That's not just a Barlow. It isn't even just a Charlow. IT IS A SPEARPOINT, SOUPBONE TC BARLOW!!! This isn't a grail knife for me, it is THE grail knife.
Charlie, I appreciate this to no end. It's amazing! The personalized tube, the very cool assortment of buttons, and the knife just is incredible. Thank you so much, Sir! I am indebted to you!
Now, any day that I received a mail delivery like this would make me thank my lucky stars, but wait, there's MORE! I do believe I hit some sort of cosmic knife-related lottery, because I also received a package from England!
A while back I sent our very own Jack Black a package containing a copy of the Great Eastern Cutlery book by David Anthony (a note to readers: if you haven't yet read this book, you need to!), an Imperial Boy's knife like that which my father once purchased as a youngster, and a GEC Rendezvous button similar to those above that Charlie gifted me. He messaged me after receiving them and expressed his thanks, and mentioned, with a wink, that he needed to send me a coin.
He did. And then some!
Jack sent me a large penny from 1892 (so neat!), a very nice note on a postcard, and a wonderful looking book all about the history of Sheffield! As if that wasn't enough, he even included a beautiful Richards sheepsfoot jack. I'd be thrilled by the knife in any regard, but Jack mentioned that his father worked for Richards when Jack was a young boy!
Jack, THANK YOU so much! It means so much that you'd share a bit of your past with me! The book looks fascinating, the knife is beautiful and excellently made, and the penny has become my new worrystone in my pocket. I'm honored to consider you a friend, Sir.
Whew, what a place this is. Thank you again to all involved here, as well as to all our regular contributors here in the Traditionals forum!
