I love Tiger Thread

Used it for the first time today. I use to do the "Hand waxed Barbour's no.5" thing but I am not going back to that. Wished I had tried it a long time ago.
It won't make me love hand stitching but it might actually make me like it...or at least hate it a little less. ;)

On a side note, Paul Long's video are so good they'll even turn a hack like me into a half decent leatherworker. :D

We now return you to your regular viewing schedule.

What's so different from waxing a number 5 right hand Barbour sinew thread and tapering the ends before threading into the needle? I love the smell of bees wax and pine sap.

Is Tiger synthetic? Can it be dyed? I'm open to a better method, if it offers benefits.

Thanks.

Mike L.

Mike, first it's already waxed so that's one less step to do. And the wax stays on the thread not on your hands like it does for the beeswax and pine sap, so no sticky hands.
It's profile is also on the flat side so it's easy to thread into the needle, especially the smaller needles which in turn threads easier through the holes. I believed it is synthetic and I don't think it can be dyed. But on the plus side, it comes in just about every color you want.

Of course some of the advantages I see may be because, as I stated, I am not a pro but just a knifemaker that has to make a sheath here and there. Barbour might be better in the hands of a good leather worker but if you are like me, you might like Tiger Thread better. And some very good leather workers do use Tiger Thread so maybe skill level is not that important. Thread is not that expensive, got mine on Etsy in smaller quantities so it's worth giving it a try I think.

Here is the seller, highly recommended: https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeatherWu...f6vVA9M2qc&eaid=33840149875&x_eaid=dd417d8024

Oh and I like the smell of beeswax and pine resin too. ;)

I too have switched all my threads over to Tiger thread, I only use 4 colors and I ordered the smaller tiger to do all my inlay work. Tiger thread is polyester blend and like Patrice said it is pre waxed and is the absolute best thread I have used for hand sewing. I ordered the samples to try off ebay and after one sheath I was hooked. I ordered the full rolls from Abbey England, They are far the best price.

Hiya Patrice I bought mine from Abbey England and it was about £60 a spool (not sure about now but it should be in that ball park). I would definitely recommend it to anyone, its a fantastic thread. It singes nicely under heat, tough and so far I've had no failure complaints. I think you may like the Havana cigar colour (the one in the pic below), its by far my favourite colour.

I usually use a 1mm thread in a 1.5mm hole saddle stitched and it threads on the snug side but it works quite well. Also even if you go through the thread braids by accident it seems to hold its structural integrity quite well.

I love this stuff and gave away my 8 cord linen and sold a full spool of 5 cord for $20. It sews like a dream and have used it things other than leatherwork

I get my Tiger thread from a guy on Etsy, Cy at Leather Wurx . Ships lightning fast from Calgary AB.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I am curious about how the price compare between Leather Wurx (bought samples from them :thumbups:)) and Abbey?
From what I can gather, a spool (1mm) at Wurx is 79$ Canadian. At abbey, you say 60 pounds which comes to roughly 114$ Canadian. And I expect that shipping would also be higher.

Leatherworx sends orders out the same day and an order comes in to the Ottawa area from Calgary in a couple days at most. That's worth a few bucks more to me. Cy is a class act to deal with and carries the full line of sizes and colours.

Disclaimer
I am not in the employ of or beholding to Leatherworx , just an extremely satisfied customer.

Thanks Kaizo, it sure does help.

From what I gathered, for example: 1.0mm - 500m - colour:Havanna Cigar

from Abbey = 22.71£ or 43.20$CAN
from Leatherwurx: 78.18$CAN

It is a big difference. Haven't checked shipping yet but in a couple months when I am ready to order the 2-3 spools I need, I will definitely look at both options.

Thanks again

I recently started using tiger thread and have to agree with every word you said. I won't go back to anything I have used in the past.
