I'm a beginner and have really basic tools, lots of jerry-rigging going on over here! lol It's unrefined but it'll get the job done. I plan on investing on more tools and really get into leathercraft, its so relaxing and fun. If you guys have any leather tools you're not using, I'd like to see if we can do some trades?

My next project will be a leather dangler for the GB 6HM.

I'm also doing other mods to tomahawk. I've stained the handle and I'm blueing the axe head.

Axe masks and danglers are how I started too. Then it's a sheathe, maybe wrapping a handle....next thing you know you are spending more time with your leather kit than using your knives. Good luck, and add to your gear when you can get good stuff. I have regretted every cheap tool I got and often ended up needing to upgrade.

That’s great advice, I like that saying, “buy once, cry once” or something like that. Buy good tools that’ll last. It’s very addicting, this leathercraft. I think it might be more making sheaths and mods than actually using the tools lol

Are Tandy tools good?

All of my dies, stamps, skives, and carving gear come from my Mom's old tools--she moved on from leather work 30 years ago, so I haven't bought any new. I do have Tandy punches, rotating punches, and setting tools, and I have been happy with them when I have got the better stuff. Going cheap doesn't mean their tools don't work, it's just that the more expensive stuff is actually easier to use. I mauled a lot of snaps on the basic setting gear, but the better set makes it a lot easier to pick the right tool and set the snap cleanly. A single punch works fine for putting one thread hole at a time, but the 5 hole punch gets you through a lot faster and straighter. I also get all of my leather and consumables from Tandy.
