Earlier this summer when Mr. Becker passed through the midwest, we had a small gathering in Topeka: Ethan, Psyop, 1066Vic and the ladies of course. Good conversation, good food, and good beer. At the time, I asked Ethan if he would object to my making my own version of the BK-14 Machax, my favorite Becker. He graciously consented. Well, here it is guys and Mr. Becker, along with a picture of a real BK-4.

The steel for this guy is actually cut from a worn out Stihl 20" chainsaw bar. Mystery steel to me so I heat treated it as if it were 1084 and put Walnut handles on it. It is not an exact copy by any means - it is slimmer, has a handle that is almost straight, and a couple of different curves.. Some of the variations were my own idea and some were necessitated by the amount of steel I had to work with. Anyway hope you like it.

Oh - and its future is uncertain - because the heat treating was guess work I do not know how it will hold up in actual use - maybe it's soft, maybe it's brittle and maybe it's just fine. So for now, and maybe permanently (because of its being such a close copy) I do not feel that I can sell it. I may have a good friend give it a workout or maybe I will or maybe both. After that some decisions will be made. Wall hanger?

By close friend do you mean your boy? He would give that thing a workout it would never forget!

Interesting design though, I kind of like it, it's like a stabby -4!

So...should I go ahead and chop and beat with it? Or hang it up on the wall so it stays pretty??? Opinions??

Nice work Col!
I say beat the snot out of it an see how it holds up. You'll stare at it on the wall and always wonder...

Looks great, Colonel!

My vote is to take it out and use it. I believe that a lot of the appreciation for a tool comes from use.

If you dont put it through the paces, you wont learn anything from it...

This.

Looks great though! Curious to hear how the straighter handle works. And I love the full convex. Kinda wish my 'chaxen were full convex.

Very nice! I like the contouring out at the POP-should index nicely for drawknife work.
I did the same thing (ish, also added a pot/grill lifter) when I customized my 4. Very cool knife.
