I wasn't sure where to post this but figured this was as good as any.

I bought a spear head from GL Drew not long ago and here is what I came up with. The head was forged out of 5160 and was meant as a survivalist type blade that could be quickly attached to a sapling or similar shaft. The edges on this thing are VERY sharp and probably too thin to make a stout throwing instrument. I imaging the tip would break pretty fast if thrown into a tree.

I used a rake handle from Lowes and all the work was done with a hacksaw, hand drill, files and a Dremel so don't be raggin' on me about the poor craftsmanship! I need to work on my cord wrapping, this was just a quick job and I plan on doing a separated one for the balance point.

Hope you guys like it. It was a fun project to do.

Okay, that's just cool! That looks like a great spear head. I like the way you used dowls to secure the head. I always figured I would have to bring a couple of nails along with a spear head to secure it. The dowls are easy to make in the field, but drilling out small holes in your shaft might be difficult ... I guess you could carry a drill bit, but it would probably be easier to carry nails. Are you planning on leaving completed as a spear and using it as a staff, or will you carry the head by itself?

I am considering throwing a SOG Spirit in my BOB. It's designed to attach to a threaded stick (i.e. broom handle) so that in a city handles would be readily available. May not be worth the weight, though, for how much you'll really "need" it.

I LOVE IT!

Seriously, I've been wanting to see someone come up with a nice survival spear rig for some time now. I've got a design that's been floating around in my head for a while now that I'll probably get done up at some point, and your post has really given me the motivation to start sketching it up!:thumbup:

It actually balances very well, just around the cord wrap you see in the middle. I don't really plan to take it apart but drilling out the dowels shouldn't be too hard if I did need to replace the staff. I have one of those foam blocks that I use with my bow that I plan on trying to throw it into. If I had enough balls this would make a great hog hunting spear. Somehow I think I'll stick to my rifles though :p.

Fun! I have a 6 foot plus ahs handle that has been giving me the eye for some ime. I bought a poll axe, and used a pick handle I carved down to fit the eye. So I have this nice piece jist begging to be used.

Very cool Kurt! I really like the wood dowels you put in. This is definitely not a spear for throwing into trees:eek: I'd get an arrow target or large bale of hay if you want to practice...this looks more like something on the battlefields of old:D:thumbup::thumbup:

Thats a really neat walking stick/spear! Cool pics. This thread reminds me that I need to start carrying my Cold Steel bushman more. I have a 5 foot haft for it and it seems to throw pretty well.

Awesome job, I can remember thinking how cool that spear head looked when it was in the for sale section !

I did a little better job on the wrap and took a few action shots courtesy of my son. I was pleased how easy it was to throw. It would cut up my "block" like swiss cheese if I kept at it. This thing is wicked !
