I saw this GTW single bevel hatchet on the bay and at $22 shipped I couldn't jump on it fast enough.
It's pretty worn, but the pictures can be a bit deceiving and I think it may still have some life left in it.

I'll know exactly just what I bought when I get it, but I think I'm fine with what I payed either way.
I've never seen another one, and lugged hatchets in general that aren't broad hatchets or half hatchet derivatives are uncommon in general.
Weight was listed at 1lb 15oz, so im thinking with the handle it probably started out as a 1-3/4lb head.
Based on the chipping I'd say the poll might be hardened.

Well I sure hope I didn't jump the gun and buy something with little to no life left in it.

Good guess about its weight

Seeing those other examples I can see now this thing has definitely lost a good deal of it's bit, a lot more than I was thinking.
I don't know why but when I first saw it , Carpenters Hewing hatchet did not come to mind.
Then I realized after I had purchased it that it was single beveled and it hit me what it was.
Not exactly what I was on the lookout for this time, but I think I may be able to get it usable again.
I've also been wanting a Hewing hatchet like this, but I want something in better condition for that.

I'll decide when I get it what I'm going to do, hopefully I won't have to remove too much steel to make it right again.

It looks like a flooring hatchet, right handed as usual.
I came across a Keen Kutter hatchet with ears and a nail notch the other day. I would have bought it had they not sharpened it on a bench grinder. By the time I would have went past the burned steel and the hollow grind it would have just been to worn.:(
Have I ever said how I feel about bench grinders?

Yeah it definitely does look like a flooring hatchet.
I had assumed most were double bevel since that's what I've seen but you know what they say about assumptions.

You know I am kind of regretting this purchase a bit since it is so worn, but I'll make the best of it and I think it may still be usable.
I guess I learned a lesson to pay more attention and not jump the gun, at least this time I may not have bought something useless.

Looks like you did jump the gun a little on this one! But oh well we can't get it right every time. I've done it three or four times! At least you have an example of a lugged GTW! My first HSB/OVB was a really worn Dayton that an ebayer skillfully photographed. It really didn't appear all that worn in the photos. But that was early on and I've learned since then...
In your case though what is $22 in our day and age? Barely dinner(if you can call it that) for two at McDonald's!
Screw it I think you did fine! Haha.

That's dinner from little Cesar's almost twice, but at McDonald's + a couple of soft serve cones barely.

It's not even two hours wage for me so I don't mind , and I do think I can do something with it.
The best part about it is that the order confirmation page actually led me to this little bugger, it's a 1-1/4 hatchet on what looks to be a factory made 19" handle. Possibly not an original package but we'll mated none the less
And what a sweet slim handle it is, the unmarked head looks like a nice one too.

I was a bit hesitant because it seemed too good to be true, but then I realized it was coming from JB and that sealed the deal.
I don't remember this one, so maybe he's been hiding it for a while ?
I'm not sure how he could let it go or how it even made it to eBay, but I'm glad it did.
Strangely enough , with all the axes I've only bought knives from him before.
I guess nothing had popped up at the right time till this.
I don't think I could put this together for the $44 shipped.
Finding a vintage haft like this isn't happening and I don't have the skills to replicate it from scratch or otherwise.

Btw I hope JB doesn't mind me borrowing his Pictures.

It's hard to find a single bevel hatchet that light. Sharpen it up and use it to rough out things, handles, spoons whatever. Pretty sure you will like how it doesn't skip off of the work.

After my work on the head, the weight is 1lb 7oz.

The angle is pretty steep, but that's about all it's got left in it with the nail puller being there.

The handle is pretty fat so I'm hoping I can salvage it, the local hardware actually wanted $15 for the same blue label link handle I bought from them for $7 a couple years ago.
Hell they want $15 for all their hatchet handles now.

That came out really nice and it will serve you well probably for the rest of your life.
I use a similar flooring hatchet a lot, it also has a curved bit and is really my go to. I think you are really going to enjoy it, well worth the time and effort. I would like to hear what you think of it after you get a chance to use it some.

I'm a lefty so I don't know, but we'll see if it actually proves to have some use for me.
