After some deep thought I decided maybe I would give my hand a try at making those blades for my wedding gifts myself. I have plenty of time between now and then. I have some D-2 stock at home, as well as a lot of hand files, access to a bench grinder and drill press, and there may be a belt grinder (4", but better than nothing) at a local pawn I can pick up for $60 or so. What I was wondering is this:
1) What's the best way to rough the shape put. I've tried using a hacksaw with fine-toothed blades but they are next to worthless on this stock even with my best efforts to keep them cool and use them in one direction only.
2) If I can't rough the shape out myself, would a maker here be willing to donate the time and equipment, with a small monetary compensation if needed, to cut the shape out if I sent the stock with the knife profiles scribed in?
3) What type of bit should I use, and what speeds, to drill the holes for pins?
4) What is the recommended procedure for cutting handle scales from wood blocks (I have desert ironwood, koa, and cocobolo)? It seems like a jig on a bandsaw would be ideal, but am I right or wrong?
5) How does one go about using bolsters? I am interested in using Madpoet's style of wood bolsters contrasting wood handles. What angle should I bevel the two pieces at, and using what equipment?
Also, I have completed my Madpoet Tribute website. There are close to 70 photos of Madpoet knives and I have a lot more coming from other owners. The URL is: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Lab/1298/madpoet/main.html
I am happy with the results and people seem to enjoy it. if nothing else there are great knife shape ideas, as well as some great handle work. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks!
