At all the 4s and 5s being offered at $55-60+. Folks right now there is a flood of these on the market. They aren't bringing that much on that auction site. I saw a pair at $100 not even draw a bid. I'd start looking at the $45 range, maybe even 40 considering how many people have put them up recently.

It's sad . But I'am not surprised . I would not have bought them if it weren't for the disco prices . I'am glad to have them now and surprised at what great blades they are . People that aren't knife nuts don't give EM a chance . The 5 I got to say was worth every penny just to see my relatives face we had over a few thanksgivings ago when I used it to carve the turkey . Everyone had to check it out . Thinking now why didn't use the 4 next time . Hell the 21 ?
 
the 21 would make a fine turkey carver, I bet. Used mine yesterday to chop coconuts and was amazed at how accurate and deep I could make it bite down on the coconuts, gotta play more with this monster!
 
The 4 and my favorite, the 5, are great knives and were great even when they sold for whatever they sold for before being discontinued. Using either or both of these knives will make ion a fan. I think many folks buy a knife, at least in part, by how it looks on a picture on their computer monitor.

The BK5, besides being a great knife to have around camp makes one heck of a watermelon cuttin, pumpkin carvin' and turkey slicin' knife. If you have to use a BK4 on a turkey, it was either a bad turkey to start with or improperly cooked.:eek:

Hey Salty I used the 5 only cause it slices so nice . I think they too are worth far more then they ane going for . The 4 and 5 I as many others have grown to like very much ! I chose other Beckers at first . Why ? Cause . When they put them on Clearence made me pull the trigger that's all . Now having used both I'am sorry I missed out on some good knife use . The 4 or 21 for that matter on a Turkey well that would just be so my family still knows I'am still a Becker Nut . It was a great turkey and a fun thanksgiving wish you where there .

I want a 5. However I have a very nice set of German and Japanese kitchen knives. They are hand picked by me for function. I can't see the 5 beating any of them because its a lot thicker. Thoughts?

I have Germany Wusth-- Classic Ikon knife set that work well . But it's cool to me to use the 1095 cause it works well also and the 5 can handle more outside duty then I care to do with my wife's German knives . Have some fun . I'am not in no way saying get a 5 for all your kitchen use . Left two letters off the name not sure if it is a no no to have mention them .

well, think of all the stuff you CAN'T do with your kitchen knives, but can easily do with a 5. It just happens that it is a very versatile knife, that can do kitchen chores with ease, but it's much more than that.

I have a 5, and for yucks I've used it in the kitchen. I still wouldn't give up my Wusthof's for it, tho. Kitchen knives are purpose built and always outperform my Beckers at kitchen tasks. However, I will not be taking my custom Nakiri or any of my Wusthof's to camp with me. Nor will I chop wood with my 10" chef's knife. And for ZN, I've learned my lesson about trying to open a coconut with the Wusthof (6" chef's) - I don't know if I'll ever get the edge straight, and that was 10 years ago. Next time I'll use a Becker.
 
I agree 100% my kitchen knives stay there camping and outdoors it's the BK15. The stock is OK for that. I just find it a little too thick for regular use especially with cukes, carrots, etc.

From what I've tried, any of the big BKs are quite adequate for coconut chopping, the 5 being the only one I haven't used for that, but I'm sure it would do a good job with that high, thin flat grind.

But, this is just to point out the many uses of a BK. The best tool to go against a coconut is a sharp machete.
 
The BK5 is a fine blade and a wicked slicer in it's own world but in the kitchen it can't be expected to perform like a dedicated kitchen knife. However, many a dedicated kitchen knives have been damaged from poor judgement. Since many homes seem to lack a cleaver or other sturdy kitchen blade for rough service the standard chef's knife or santoku is often pressed into service doing things they shouldn't. I love squash of all kinds and have seen a few edges damaged trying to separate a whole acorn or butternut squash into two pieces. I have a cleaver in 1095 I use for the rough stuff. While I probably would not use a BK5 in the kitchen myself it would certainly be a viable option for some of the rougher cutting tasks one may encounter in the kitchen and if I didn't have that cleaver I would probably grab the bk5.
