I am looking for a good USB battery backup to keep in my edc backpack. I've tried a cheapo ebay special from China and a Rayovak from Walmart, but neither worked well for me. What i am looking for is a backup battery that i can leave charged in my backpack. My problem with the 2 i purchased was after sitting for a few weeks they lost all there juice and i need something i can rely on.

I've looked for hours online and since there are 8 million options i figured i would see if anyone had any first hand experience.

I have this one. While I have only had it a short while, it has performed well.

Another option is to buy any flavor that uses rechargeable AA batteries, and then feed it with Eneloop batteries (I think made by Sanyo). The Eneloops have a very low discharge rate, and I think they will be 90% full after a year or something like that. They are the only batteries we use at the Powernoodle Compound.

If you get the standard version like I linked to, it would not be a bad idea to top it off once a week if you are serious about having it ready to go. JMO.

Another idea is to buy another phone battery, and top it off every several days as needed.

Find a solar charger. It's almost impossible to run out of charge during the day, and most have the added benefit of a small LED. Even most of the cheap crappy ones will do what you need (but don't buy a crappy one. Find a good one ;))

Thanks guys for the recommendations.

With my old Droid i just kept an extra battery with me, but the battery on my iphone is not removable.

Grease: i've been meaning to pick up another solar charger anyways. My EDC backpack is also my diaper bag and my 17 month old daughter got ahold of my last Brunton solar charger and that was the end of it.

I use this. Its a Sanyo Eneloop KBC-01. Its pretty small and uses Eneloop rechargeable AA batteries. As powernoodle stated earlier, Eneloops retain 80% of their charge even when not in use. For my Blackberry 9900 I get about a 75% charge from two AA batteries which is always plenty of juice to get me through to the end of the day. I also carry a spare set of rechargeable AAs. It doesn't work with standard alkaline AAs and you also need a charger for the AAs. I use a crappy Energizer recharger that you can get just about anywhere to charge the batteries.

I got mine in Japan but you can get one here.

Here's a pic of the batteries. It comes with two rechargeable AAs.

I second the New Trent recommendation. They've got good stuff, I bought my IMP 880 based on good reviews online, and have had it for more than a year now. Really happy with it... good size for a cargo pocket or backpack for when you're travelling, but a little big to EDC.

I can charge my iphone around 6 times with it -- that's 3 days without ever having to see a wall socket if I had to.

They have a few more models out now that they didn't have when I bought mine.

What kind of phone? When I had a "dumb" phone, a single AA battery in an adapter would give me about 10% battery life. with my smart phones, even my smallest one, that translates to 1%. The best is to look at your phones battery cap in mAh and compare that to the rating of the pack you want. A lot of the chargers are only suitable for use with dumb phones. The better formula is using Watt hours, but I don't have that formula in my brain

Get the Goal Zero Guide 10 Adventure Kit. It comes with the Nomad 7 watt solar panel and a Guide 10 battery pack. The battery pack will charge a cell phone 2.5 times and GPS and other devices.
