Well, I received my Cold Steel Trail Hawk yesterday, and decided to take her to task. This isn't a display piece by any means.....it's going in my Jeep as a tool, and possibly a weapon.

The improvements were as follows: Stripped/ground/sanded original finish off the head, smoothed the imperfections, then cold blued and aged.

Stripped the haft and countersunk dimples on all four sides of the haft for a better grip. Torched the entire haft for hardening and looks. Stained dimples. Sealed with hand rubbed tung oil. Has a total satin finish.

Not pretty, but better looking than the original and now it has a functional grip and can be used.

Only took about an hour...........

First pic shows the hawk, second shows the staggered placement of the dimples on the haft (second from R)

Looks good ! Nice collection and great way to store and show...

Thanks guys. If I didn't spend my money on this, it would be another motorcycle in the garage!!

I guess it's cheaper.....

Damn, those are nice! I gotta hang around this forum more often. I'm lovin' these hawks the more I look at them. Thanks for sharing & great job on that Cold Steel.

Very nice pile o hawks. I cant wait to get back to civilization and my stored tools. I have several plans for moding my Rifleman, many of which Im stealing from here.:D Im saving a few Ptarmagan feet for possible application. The feet are white feathered and have claws on them. They look pretty cool actually, thinking about letting some dry out then having them hang off tassles, maybe tie them to leather laces and secured with red thread. I will almost surely apply some brass tacks and darken the handle wood one way or the other. I will definately sand and gun blue the hawk head, for sure. I am attracted to the Indian hawks seen on the plains during the 1850s-1890s. Im not going too deep with the bells and whistles though. To me, less is more with hawk embellishment and Im still going to use it, not just hang it on a wall. Not that this is bad though because some of these hawks are just a treat to look at. Including yours.;)

Thanks Upnorth!

I've thought about embellishing another hawk or two as well, but I haven't quite figured out what I want to do yet. I like your idea.....sounds simple, yet I believe it will prove to be an elegent plus to your hawk.

Let's see it when she's done!
