I can relate to the need for a Bowie! Something about a big clip point blade can't be beat by alternatives that are often more appropriate.
Well, I own an Ontario Marine Raider Bowie, and I put it through the paces by chopping down some dead (but very hard) trees in my back yard (8 in diameter) and then splitting the wood. The blade held up very well, as it should have considering it's a big, heavy, sharpened hunk 'o metal with an edge about as thick as an axe. But the handle, OWCH! It rips up your hand with those stupid grooves. Gloves are a must when working with this callous peeler.
If you're looking at the Western Bowie, you might also want to check out a similar Bowie by Traditions Firearms. One of the major gun manufacturers also makes a big Bowie with similar blade profile, and Gerber makes one as well.
All of these big blades will come in at under your price, many of them half. If you are confident ordering from overseas or find a local distributor, Muela and Aitor are spanish companies that also make similar Bowies that in my opinion beat all of the above in quality for the price.
Happy hunting!
