Thanks. I was actually on the phone hitting F5 for the last hour and had to put a buddy of mine on hold to send my emai. My computer clock seems to be about 10 - 15 seconds off and I think mine said 20.55.28 central. Not the best. But, I would hope good enough. No telling with these fanatical hogs.
I guess I should have set my computer clock and been a hair more on the ball (????)

Anyway, my dog is one of those dogs that LOVES to run and has to be on leash or locked in the back yard. My wife went to get the mail and the gate didn't latch. He got out and was running like crazy. He is a VERY good natured happy dog and one of my best buds. When he runs, you can see him smiling. When my wife saw his black blaze blur by her, she ran inside to get treats and yelled at me to come help her get our dogs - actually both of our dogs got out - brother and sister Basenji's.
We live in a cul-de-sac about 4 houses from a subdivision cross street that has moderate traffic at about 6:30 pm with people driving home. The speed limit is 20 mph.
When we got to end of the driveway, we noticed they were not in the cul-de-sac. Usually they make a lap or two like a banked Nascar track and if we are lucky they stop for a leak or to sniff something. But, this time they had crossed the street.
Out of habit, we called them. They "can" be very good about coming when we call. We tried to train them to come with treats.
This time we called and saw them actually hear us from about 7 houses away and turn to come back. The boy was HAULING. He is very fast. Everything happened within seconds. My wife said something about not good coming across intersection. We were jogging towards the intersection. I mentally quickly thought to myself without having time to respond.... thinking my wife was right - with him running like that back to us across the intersection, he wasn't going to look for cars. About that instant, a car came into view at I would guess 25 - 28 mph and hit him right square in his side.
He weighs about 22 lbs and went flying about 5-6 feet rolling across the concrete. The car barely breaked and we are very lucky he some home bounced forward and rolled out of the hit and ran like crazy away from the car that didn't stop.
He ran right past my wife and I and into our back yard.

My wife was freaked out and crying and I have to admit, I was freaked when I saw him hit and very scared for a good while until reasonably convinced he seems to only have supperficial wounds.

Best I can tell, he doesn't have a clue what happened. But, he yelped when hit and he is pretty beat up. He bit a hole in his tongue that has been bleading for about an hour +, has about 6-8 gash / road rash cuts and scrapes, I cut in his side we think from a license plate frame or something and what appears to be a pretty badly bruised right hip/thigh area.

Nothing seems broken and we aren't seeing any signs of internal damage. He has a light cough. But, it doesn't appear to be hurting him too bad.

He ran away from the hit. And was very interested in going for a walk prior to the Ganzaaa. But, we only let him have a short walk.

Now he is starting to get sore and stiff and limping a little more. But, I think he will be alright.

Anyway, that is just "one" of the things that happened today.... :(:o

Here are some pics of my buddy (black boy and his chestnut red sister) that my wife and I feel we almost lost today:

DWRW -- those are some BEAUTIFUL dogs! You can just tell they're extremely intelligent, with those big eyes and alert ears.

Smoke and prayers going up from Virginia, just in case.

Sorry about the stress ... but it seems to be one of those things that just goes with 'living.' Hang in there; time will bring perspective.

Thanks. Yeah... He actually went for a short walk about an hour after being hit and wanted to go more. He LOVES his walks. But, he was limping and we didn't want to let him go far. So, just about 7-8 minutes - enough to take care of his business and let us watch his movements.

He is still obviously hurting. His tongue seems to hurt a lot. I think he may have bit all the way through it. But, he is being fussy about letting us look.

Luckily, we saw it bleeding and put a bunch of old blankets quickly down and he has been licking blood all over everything.

His hip is also obviously sore and getting stiff. He can't lean on that side, he is limping and favoring it when jumping up and down on the sofa. But, he "Is" able to do it. So, I think he is good. I think it is just a very bad muscle bruise with some swelling.

Anyway, it just really scared the crap out of my wife and I.

We don't have any kids. These two are like our babies. And the boy (Dakota) is just a really happy good natured buddy. He is a big lap lover and leans on our feet if we are standing still, he sits behind me in my desk chair regularly, etc.

I would be pretty upset if he were hurt bad or killed. And if he hadn't rolled out and ran, he would have been run over by the car.

I am counting some blessings right now. We were very lucky. I would think the chances that he survived the pop he took to be very small and for him to appear to only have surface wounds is freakin' amazing. :o

Thanks for the smoke.

I am feeling much better with time. I think he will be alright. But, we had a bad scare there.

We were very unsure about possible internal injuries and whether we should take him to the vet.
But, I think he will be good.

As far as smart. They are quite smart in some ways and not the brightest dogs I have owned in other ways (????). But, the boy is extremely loveable, playful, good natured and compasionate. They are both highly bonded to my wife and I. The girl loves us, but she is much more aloof with strangers.

The are sight and scent hound type dogs and have very acute senses and very alert. They both fancy themselves as hunters and try to get their prey. They are fun to watch stalk. They hunker down and stalk. Sort of a cross between how a cat hunts and a pointer.
But because of how we have fortified our back-yard, the squirrels tend to give them fits. :p
