I need a whittling knife, preferably fixed but i will take folding as long as it locks. it can be no longer than 1.5-2 inches and my caps is $75. I need help!! thank you!!

Condor Tool & Knife Sub Tavian might do. It's small-ish at 3 1/8" blade. But it has a nice fullsize handle, which is kinda hard to find in a 1-2" blade knife. Maybe you need to look at wood carving tools, IDK ??? Folders---Cold Steel makes the mini Recon 1, it has a 2" blade, but also has a small handle.

Do a little research on Mora. I bought a Companion a couple months ago to see what the fuss was all about. I'll just say if you have any knives you like then don't get one. You'll end up hating your expensive knives after spending some time with the Mora. I've never seen a knife that will cut like a Mora. I keep going back throgh my collection looking for something that works as good and haven't found one yet. It just ain't right that a $1 knife can whip a $200 knifes butt in every aspect.

Flexcut carving tools are awesome. You can get a set of three for under $75.00. I have a few and one of their draw knives. They make some nice folders with carving blades too.

The Rick Butz roughing and detail carving knifes run ~$32 + s/h from Woodcraft. Butz's books are great - never saw his TV show, however. The knives are a great hand fit for small to medium+ sized hands. Mine came razor sharp, but a carver/whittler should be able to effectively re-edge his tools - and some have reported new knives as needing sharpening. Great for smaller carving in the round, chip carving, or whittling. It always helps to coarsely shape your your carving first with a coping saw or bandsaw first. Note: If a chain saw is required to rough out your project, you'll likely need bigger knives, too.

A good way to spend your extra moola, if you carve 'in the round', is to buy an armored glove for the non-dominant hand... thumbs, palms, etc, don't carve so well... and leave a red sticky liquid on/in the wood. Get to the dollar store and buy some +3.00 - +4.00 readers that fit - great aid for tired/mature eyes. The big thing... be safe and have fun!

I know that Queen makes some folders designed for this purpose - you need to take a look at wood carving sites on the web.

A couple yrs ago, I bought a little Wharncliffe FB from DP Knives on this Forum. I think the handle's in cocobolo, but regardless, the blade's a thin Wharncliffe in 1095 steel. Works great (I bought it specifically for whittling) & it wasn't expensive ($45 shipped, IIRC). The suggestions given have all been good. If you're looking for a FB, a pair of knives (Like the Buts pair from Woodcraft) are a good choice & well within your budget. If you want a portable little folder, Flexcut's Whittlin' Jack isn't a bad choice. It's well within your budget ($40-50, I believe), but the blades don't lock open.

Flexcut's Pocket Jack isn't a bad choice, either & might be had at the upper end of your budget (They retail for $83) & the blades lock, which is nice.

Good luck with your choice.

thanks everyone! im gonna get a kn30 with a hip sheath. if anyone has a reason for me not to get one, please tell me
.

I'd take a look at the forged blade version of FlexCut's line. I bought the 4 piece set about 2 years ago & they are my go-to whittlers. Drake & Helvie are also excellent brands.
