The Rick Butz roughing and detail carving knifes run ~$32 + s/h from Woodcraft. Butz's books are great - never saw his TV show, however. The knives are a great hand fit for small to medium+ sized hands. Mine came razor sharp, but a carver/whittler should be able to effectively re-edge his tools - and some have reported new knives as needing sharpening. Great for smaller carving in the round, chip carving, or whittling. It always helps to coarsely shape your your carving first with a coping saw or bandsaw first. Note: If a chain saw is required to rough out your project, you'll likely need bigger knives, too.
A good way to spend your extra moola, if you carve 'in the round', is to buy an armored glove for the non-dominant hand... thumbs, palms, etc, don't carve so well... and leave a red sticky liquid on/in the wood. Get to the dollar store and buy some +3.00 - +4.00 readers that fit - great aid for tired/mature eyes. The big thing... be safe and have fun!
