hello,

i have read a few treads. i shapen my knives free hand. but now i need a good sharpener. i am going to buy a BM42 and later on buy more expensive knives for my use.

i need a good sharpener. i have been using an old wet stone to sharpen my Spyerco knives(sorry) and kitchen knives. i have read about a diamond stone (i think) and that it gives a good edge. I am still with old technology and i want to get up to new technology.

what do you guys recommend?

what should i get?

should i still use the wet stone for the rough edges?
i want a fine edge but i has to be done freehand.

also i might need another stone for serrated edges.

Diamond sharpeners are pretty coarse. A soft Arkansas stone is inexpensive, and works well, as do the ceramic sharpeners.

I've always used only an Arkansas novaculite stone, but I couldn't keep from scratching the blades. So I recently bought a Spyderco Sharpmakr (about $40 online). After watching the video I sharpened our very dull kitchen knives. It's a piece of cake, and No Scratches!

I also bought an AG Russell ceramic system. It works great, but isn't as versitile as the Spyderco.

Happy shopping,
Bob

I have some inexpensive-double sided stones that I picked up at the Depot. I use them for my axe and machete.

For more serious steel hogging I have acquired a collection of 6" x 2" DMT stones in various grits. All I can say about them is they work well. In fact when I first got them I had to learn to go easy or I took off more steel than I needed to.

I can do a fair job free hand but I must admit I cheat. I put a piece of tape of the blade to avoid scratches and use a small alligator clip from the stationary store. It's the thing that hold papers together. They come in all sizes and I use the small ones. When I clip it on the spine of the knife I get just under a 15 degree angle which is good for most of my knives. It is very easy to raise a BURR this way.

Razor edge systems makes good dry hones. I have gotten good results from DMT and EZLap diamond sharpening pads also. All these are pretty well priced and work well so six of one half dozen of another. Take your pick. I've had no problems with any of these systems for free hand sharpening.

I believe I saw them at Walmart recently. If not, do a search for them.
