Hi, all, I've been into knives for about one year now, and I'd like to get my friend of 3/4 of my lifetime a gift. For Christmas, I got him the CRKT mirror-finished Kiss. He lost his last money clip about 3 mon. before I bought it for him, and he hates wallets, needless to say, he loved it.
So, his birthday is coming up, and I was going to get him a Havanna clipper because he likes cigars, but thanks to you good folks, I found out they don't really work to well. So, I'd like to get him something functional, it doesn't have to be a cigar cutter, but I don't want it to be "just" a knife. and, n,t I don't really want to get him a multi-tool or a Victorinox. Is there a knife out there that might have a bottle opener along with a sizable blade? He is also something of a microbrew connesiour. And of course I am open to any suggestions.
thanks.

It's all about perspective.

Have you had a look at the french 'Laguiole' knives? Somebody posted a website for them the other day in the General Discussion forum. I am not sure about the prices, though I dont think they will be particularly expensive.

Get him a small Leatherman. My favourite is the Mini Tool, but a lot of people favour the Micra (scissors instead of pliers).

Hello,

I really don't think you will be able to find a "special" (ie carbon fiber, micarta, designer steel) knife for under $50.00, but you can find a whole slew of multi-tools in this price range. I give Leathermans as gifts all the time and people really seem to like them. I would vote for the SuperTool which can be had for a hair less than $50 at some places.

Good luck!

I have a lot of fun with my Case "Hobo" it has a fairly good sized blade and a fork. The fork "blade" also has a cap lifter on it. I tell everybody it's my "city boy" survival knife.

I'd second the Case Hobo.

Another idea is a gift I just got from my wife. It is the GT Knives Divix.
Don't know if he is a golfer, but it is an Auto-opening golf divot tool. Very nicely built. Also has a ball marker and a cigar cutter. Comes with a pocket clip also. I don't smoke so I can say for sure how well the cigar cutter works though. Pretty cool toy. My golf buddies all like it.

ARRRRGH!! Not the dreaded Steeler's fan!!! (must do the Steeler's fan protection ritual, now)....
In response to several comments, let me say that it's not that I don't want to spend more on a gift, I just don't want to "up the ante" on gift buying. So far, he and I have an unspoken agreement not to go overboard on buying each other a gift. Now, if he gets married or something, I'd throw that rule out the window. But in the meantime.........

I can't think of a nice knife with a bottle opener outside of the multitool/SAK area. But an elegant small knife is pretty easy. Browning makes a "Presentation Lockback" series with 2-1/8" AUS-8 blades and fancy handle materials. They even come in presentation cases. At Cumberland knives you can get them around $27.00 for Cocobolo handles up to $36.17 for stag handles. I really think the stag would be great. The blades are thin and the AUS-8 gets razor sharp. It would do a nice job on a cigar.
