I am a beginner to hatchets, and would like one for backpacking. I currently use a 14" fiskars hatchett, but its big and ugly with a horrible plastic sheath. what would you recommend for a lightweight, CHEAP hatchett. Thank you for your replies in advance.

I agree with Goodmanfj on that one. Cheap is relative. Cheap to you and I may mean supercheap to guys who think paying $300 for a hawk is cheap. What you need is the best quality for the money which is again, realtive. :D

I know that didn't help. Check out Hawk City USA for some different choices and price ranges.

I think you already have a cheap, lightweight hatchet. The Fiskars is great for the price. Just make or buy a nicer sheath and you are good to go. Next choice would be going with the Wetterlings offerings. They are pretty much out of stock eveywhere except for the 13" model.

Actually, the Gerber is a nice one and Rob from Survival Sheath Systems has a very cool new kydex sheath that allows you to use the hammer backside without uncovering the blade, preventing accidents. Contact him direct about them.
