I Need a Grill!

Hello fellow forumites. (To skip why I need the grill, go to paragraph 2).
I am about a week away from moving into a new apartment, and they allow grills, but you they must be 10 feet away from your apartment when turned on. This is a problem because I live on the second floor, and am not going to be able to lug my huge barbeque up and down a flight of stairs every time I want to cook a steak. The bigger problem is that almost 90% of the meat I eat, is grilled. And I eat a lot of meat.

So what are some good small, portable grills that are out there for less than $60?

So far I'm looking at:
The Weber Go-Anywhere Gas Grill for $54
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10756110

and the Uniflame Portable Gas Grill for $35
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10828988&findingMethod=rr

and the Uniflame Deluxe Portable Electric Grill for $35
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10828977

Are these okay for normal grilling? Can they get hot enough to at least sear a steak? Are there any others I'm overlooking? Is an electric grill about as good or better than a gas?

Electric grills, in my experience, do not generate the kind of heat necessary to properly sear a steak.

A viable alternative to grilling a steak outdoors is to use a screaming hot cast iron pan, or cast iron grill pan indoors. Just google "cast iron steak" and see what comes up.

This way you can cook steak any time of day, any season of the year, with minimal investment in gear.

Just be warned that this does generate a lot a smoke, so be ready to open windows when you get started.

Edited to add: Cast iron keeps its heat for long time. Should you go this route be sure to take proper care in handling any cast iron gear. It's the steak you want to sear, not the palm of your hand.

This grill has seen more tailgate events than I can remember. I bought it a few years ago and have used A LOT. It's very portable, stable, and heats evenly. It's very easy to take apart for that deep cleaning after cooking Bubba burgers :)

I love this grill - the ingniter never worked for me but there is a hole that is strategically placed near the bottom/side of the burner that allows for easy access of a long ligther or match.

I can't say enough about this grill.

I'm a Weber Performer man so I'm not normally a gas cooker, but this thing does great.

I've had a couple of small gas grills and I really like them.
We had the small Weber and it was great, but somehow it got misplaced when we moved:confused:. We have the large Weber grill that we have had for almost 10 years and it has been great, and its seen a lot of use...

My wife was at a garage sale one day and found a Sunbeam that was basically the same as our little Weber, still in the box. Got it for 10 bucks and it has held up well too..

You can get a nice cast iron hibachi from the BBQ Guys for 30 bucks and your steaks will taste much better cooked over charcoal than gas.

I couldn't agree more since I am a die-hard charcoal guy. I suggested a gas grill for him since it is much easier to maintain for his application. He has to lug the thing up and down stairs to grill his food. A charcoal grill would have to be left outside to cool down whereas a gas grill with a locking lid, like the one in my link, can be picked up and carried away like a brief case immediatly after cooking.

I want to get one of those hibachi grills really bad! I love the idea of having two different cooking surfaces for easy adjustment of the heat.

Weber Smokey Joe Silver. The vents on the bottom of the silver work better than the vents on the side of the gold/platinum. I ended up buying both and using the bottom half of the silver and the top half of the gold so I could carry it easier.

Well as far as the ones who suggested charcoal, thank you, but they actually have charcoal grills at the apartments (the ones that stand on poles with a box and a grate). I just figured with the amount of grilling I do, gas would be much easier. Also, I actually don't cook steak often, mostly I cook chicken. But for when I do cook steak, I want it to be cooked well, which is why I asked. I figured if it can sear a steak, then anything that needs to be cooked lower than a steak will be doable. Thank you for the input! I'll probably go with the Weber for $54

It's a good one for the money. When my full sized old grille finally gave up the ghost, I picked up one of these to tide me over, and I've yet to purchase another. I'ts worked well on all types of meat, fish and veggies. Very portable too.

I also live on the second floor i have the weber go anywhere grill but i use the charcoal one works fine unless you cook for more than 2 people then your gonna be down there for awile . Do you have anywhere you could just lock a bigger grill to fence or tree ?

If you're going to grill with gas, you might as well use the burners on your stove with a griddle. If you want that good grilled taste, get a small really cheap charcoal grill (that you can afford to lose) and just chain it outside where you use it.

Duh, should have read what LEGION 12 said, pretty much the same advice.
