bind these together in happy matrimony?
what do you think the best knot is and why?
2 knots really one on both ends....but you know that,
maybe a different one on each end?

A hangmans knot is very secure, relatively easy to tie and looks good. It's the same as the one Chris Reeve uses on the Sebenza. There is a tutorial on how to tie it on his web page HERE

I second that. They can be tied in a very compact manner, with nothing sticking out at all.

The constrictor is nice on things that compress a little, but I would prefer some of the other listed options to tie something off to a stiff ring. Also, if it's tied properly and pulled really tight (as it should be), it's a real pain in the tush to untie. :D

I've tied a few icicle hitches... it's a hell of a knot. I once tied an icicle in 1/2" dacron around 1/4" stainless standing rigging on a sailboat. I could put my whole weight on it with zero slippage. The updated version of Des Pawson's "Handbook of Knots" includes the icicle hitch, btw. That's my favorite knot book, and you can find it at most B&N's that I've found.

I can do the first one, but all others escape me.

This is fun though I put those things on my bag zippers and my 722, and I'm still looking for other things to put them on. I feel kina gay? :) :D :)

I tried the Icicle on a pipe with 8mm cord I then press as hard as I could (I weight 225 and can dip till the cows come home so it was pretty hard) and after it settled the first couple of cm it held. Pretty impressive for a knot you can move up a pole.

I snugly tied hangman's noose will allow you to lengthen or shorten (within limits) the distance between hook and keys...

I'm constantly on the lookout for an excuse to use the icicle hitch.

"Y'know that ain't gonna hold."

"Wanna bet?"

:D

I love the taut line hitch - since it looks like a crappy, loose knot until you tighten it. My father in law, on watching me tie down a canopy and observing me tie a loose, droopy knot: " no no no . . what the hell do you think you're doing? . . . oh . . . wow! . . "

Re: the keychain - I'd be tempted to tie a single hangman's noose, with one keyring on the top loop and one on the bottom.

Brewthunda, I like that one too, and I'm amazed when I see books that don't tell people that all that it is is a rolling hitch tied back around the standing part of the line.

Hangmans noose would be the simple way to go. Actually, any fixed loop would work. Have you seen a Matthew Walker knot or a diamond knot. PM me if you want help.

if you simply want to secure the ends of the cord to the two objects, just use a double overhand (half of a double fisherman's) tied back on itself. it is stonger than you, very compact and you get to say "hafa dubul fisha-mans." fun all around.

if you are looking for something more presentable. throw away the brass hook, get a stainless hook (ex. tadgear.com) or even black plastic clip, then tie a hangman's on the new hooking device and tie the two loose ends together with a dubul fisha-mans, thus resulting in another loop. i have one on my ultra-g with a plastic clip on the end. looks pretty good and low-key. ha-ha. pun
