I am moving to the Kalamazoo area in about a month. I need a new cell phone. I would like to hear from people who live in the area and how your reception is with what you have. I would like a nextel, but I am interested in all types.
Thanks!

I migrate between southern Michigan and mid Ohio, and I highly recommend Verizon. I have been a customer for almost 2 years.

Their network in the area is very strong, and I have almost never had a problem with static, lack of signal, or dropped calls.

All my friends at college have cell phones, and during a ski trip to the UP last January those of us with Verizon were the only ones able to get a signal.

Not only have I found their coverage to be excellent, but their customer service is great as well. On the rare occasions when I have to call and ask a question or get something resolved the operators have all been friendly and well informed. In my experience this is a rarity, especially for telecom companies.

Search through some online review sites, I have found that Verizon consistently is ranked the #1 overall cell phone provider in the nation.

I have a verizon phone now. When I called to ask they said that their coverage in that area was dependent on other companies towers and that they had to pay extra for the use of them, and that I should just get a phone from a different company. This is confusing according to what you said. When you are in that area does your phone register as roaming?

Because I'm on the nationwide plan, I don't get roaming anywhere.

I'm not sure about what towers they use and stuff like that. I bought my phone from a place in Ohio, and it works just fine in Michigan; so I've never really gone looking for how Verizon actually handles the calls.

You may want to check out www.howardforums.com

Its a big cell phone forum.

I recomment at&t mine works great, no gaps in lower michigan anywhere unless I'm in a steel basement (network engineer, it happens :)

Enjoy Kalamazoo, it's a nice lil town :)
