I Need a new EDC

For a lot of years I've been carrying a Spyderco as EDC. Last weekend it vanished from a hotel room in Canada. Now I need to replace it with something. In a perfect world, it would have about a 3" plain blade, tanto or drop point, pocket clip for hinge down carry. One handed opening. Assisted opening would be a great bonus. I'm told I'm limited to $100. General use would be cutting boxes, rope, cheese, etc.
In other words, basic general daily chores. It will ride in the right front pocket just about always, with the ability to be used in any self defense situation that my Kimber 1911 is not needed for.
I don't know anything about various steels.
I do know that this is the place to come for very experienced and informed help.
Thanks,

If you're happy with the Spyderco, I'd suggest a Rookie, Caly3 or Delica4.

Try a Benchmade 745 mini Dejavoo. It looks just the one in the photo but smaller. and well inside your $$$ range. It will do all you mentioned as well as cut Cheese like crazy...

You may also want to try a Byrd Cara Cara! For about $30.00 it's an awesome knife!!!

I use my benchmade grip 551BKODD2 as a weekday EDC, it works wonders on nearly every task. my new weekend EDC will be the limited edition kershaw random leek! im so excited for it to arrive!
my best friend uses a Kershaw Leek with S30V and G10. leek is a great choice.

Thanks for all the replies.
I just ordered a Leek. It seems to be the closest to combining all of my wants and the price is among the lowest. I just don't like the Bird opening hole, and a couple of the others have the pocket clip set up for hinge up carry. I just can't get the hang of that.

Thanks again for all of the help!!

I have a few knives. My go-to knife is my Spyderco Native. ...funny 'cause I bought it as a "give away knife." I did NOT think I would like it at all. I really just bought it because it was $45, and USA made. I have a Benchmade 940 on the way to me that I'm pretty pumped about. I'd say you could poke someone with a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) if you "needed" to... so the idea of self defense is kinda silly. A flashlight is better suited for that task. I say get yourself a Benchmade Mini Griptilian (555HG) and a Surefire G2 LED... you could snag the duo for like $120. Or get a Native and a Surefire G2... you could snag THAT duo for like $85. Of course, you could get the Mini Grip solo for $60 shipped.

Well, I don't know about silly. If I have to use a knife for self defense, that to me, implies a deadly threat being made against me. If that is the case, I don't want to "poke" that threat I want to stop it.
The odds are, that my C2 will also be in a pocket. More tools are better than fewer.

My vote is for a D2 Grip...nice olive green handle w/ topclass ergonomics. A Buck Tempest or Sirus in 154cm is a close second...heck maybe a tie. Good luck with your leak.

Ok, I have the grip in my pocket right now so, tie goes to the grip...but the Tempest is on the table next to the mouse...so close.

I would reccomend another Spyderco-Byrd if you weere happy with the last one. I've go a Raven in my pocket as I type. It's a decent knife that opens easily and is conveient for just about any use. It's between three-and-three-and-a-half inch blade. It's affordable and works. I also find the handle very comfortable. I tend to buy affordable knives that work.

I don't have any Spyderco blades but I do know that the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman is a perfect EDC. It may be large for a folder but if you're looking for a knife that can handle just about any task you throw at it, it might be the one for you. And you can get it online for a little over 20 bucks! That's a BIG plus in my book...heck I'd buy four if I had a $100 budget :D

I ordered the basic stainless Leek. $38.00 + shipping.
I like the assisted opening, the ability to switch the pocket clip if needed, and I had to have something with hinge down carry. The Leek should work out fine as an EDC knife.

Thanks again for all of the advice.
