I need a new knife!

I gave my EDC to a friend of mine who moved away. It was a CRKT M16 something. It had that nice Carson flip opener, and now I need to replace it.

I'm buying some stuff from the REI Outlet online store and they have a couple of CRKT knives in AUS8 and AUS4,

There's a link to the CRKT products they're selling. I definitely need the Carson flipper. One-handed, easy, reliable flipping open is a must. I don't really care so much about assisted opening. I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker with the diamond sticks and the tan and white sticks. If I need to sharpen it up once a week that's fine with me.

While I carry it (used to carry it) every day, I don't cut something with it every day. Serrations are nice, I'd like to have a portion of the blade serrated.

What do you guys think of the Zytel spear-point? Like that one? How about the My Tighe? I don't really know much about knives, I just carry one around with me. If there's some really good deal out there that isn't a CRKT... please let me know! While I don't have a whole lot of money, I don't mind spending it on a good knife.

Thanks for any replies!

It won't add much to your costs if you stick to a reasonably good grade of steel, say at least AUS-8. Kershaw has come out with excellent flippers in Sandvik 12C27 and 13C26. Take a look at the Storm, Groove, and Junkyard Dog. The Storm & the JYD come in small & large versions.

I'm not putting down CRKT. They've got a lot of creativity there too, and they support the low-budget buyer nicely. I'm just not as familiar with their knives.

I have one of those mini carson M16's. It's a nice knife in a lot of ways, but I have to say, the thumbstud is crap. You pretty much have to open if with that flipper thing, because the thumbstud goes all the way to the frame, so it's really difficult to use it to open the knife because you can't get your thumb under it. You have to rely on friction.
I guess if you've learned to use the flipper thing, then it's all good, but I never really did.

I was going to mention Kershaw also. The new "Made in the USA" knives just released; JYDI, JYDII, and Groove, are available for around the $50.00 mark or a little below it. EXCELLENT value. I have a Groove and it is a great knife with good steel and the smoothest flipper action I've seen on a production knife. Great lockup with the framelock also. Do a search on Groove and you'll find a bunch of info.

... the thumbstud goes all the way to the frame, so it's really difficult to use it to open the knife because you can't get your thumb under it.

That's a problem if you are trying to push the thumbstud away from the frame. Is there room behind the thumbstud, to push it forward instead? This is usually the best way to open a knife with thumbstud, opening disc, or opening hole.

id go for a spyderco delica. Quick opening with the hole, and overall great value in a knife. Im pretty sure they sell them in the walmarts down in the states for 50ish dollars ( I live in canada so im not 100% on the prices down there=))

I am not a big fan of CRKT. AS of late, their materials and quality (especially in those Zytel knives with Aus-4) have really dropped. They are nice looking knives, but I would not trust their liner locks for hard use.

I know you like the flipper, but I would suggest you look at Benchmade red class knives or Spyderco's native or delica. If you could really stretch the budget I'd go with a BM mini-griptilian....This is a good deal:
