Knife friends,
I need a locking folder. I sail and kayak so it will be near salt water. I have a bad habit of losing knives so I want to keep the price around $50 but I am willing to pay more. I like partially serrated blade as they will cut a line. I loved the old Gerber EZ out. I hate the skeletonized one they make now. I would like it to be US made. I have been looking on the internet but I can not make up my mind. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Beth

BA - My advice would be to go with Spyderco with a Salt 1 SE or a Pacific Salt SE (as suggested above). If you want something made in the US the natural choice would be Kershaw Shallot or Blur.

Benchmade makes a Griptilian model designed for.water use as.well as.a knife.based on the Rift design. I believe the latter is model # 111h2o and both should be available as partially serrated.

Edit: wow my phone went period crazy

Spyderco Salt...or you can double the investment and get the Boye dendritic cobalt sailors knife!

Thanks.
I just found this http://www.leatherman.com/products/product.asp?id=41&f=11&c=2
Anyone have experience with this Leatherman?

I have one. 420 HC should be pretty corrosion resistant and edge retention should be average, which is no big deal if you are just using it for emergency cutting. The knife is a VERY light knife. The handle has the potential to be slippery if your hands are wet.

I would suggest a Spyderco Salt 1 or a Saver Salt. they are about the same overall size as the crater but the opening hole makes for a more foolproof opening method than the small stud on the crater and I would trust the lockback over the liner lock of the leatherman.

If you need a made in the usa folder, I would suggest the Mini-Griptilian. It is slightly smaller than the crater but offers an opening hole and decent steel. 154 CM might not be as corrosion resistant as 420 HC or H-1 but for a small folder with an opening hole and a secure lock you can't go wrong.

Here is a review I did on the Crater a while back:

If your going to be in saltwater I would want a VERY stainless knife such as the Spyderco Salt.
I'm not sure what other companys offer a steel designed to be around saltwater, but I'm sure some others here will know.

Have you considered buying a victorinox deck knife? They are much lighter an much more inexpensive than just about anything else you can fine that will preform anywhere near as well, and you can pick up kydex sheaths for them some places.

have you considered Spyderco Salt?

This was my first thought even though it is not made in the US. It's my go to knife around 7 months of the year because it's hot as hell down here and I sweat buckets. I recently lost mine and will be getting another very soon. The Salt I is a great knife for ~$55. The Atlantic might be an even better option though.

have you thought of a fixed blade?

a mora clipper is stainless and cheap enough that you won't care if you drop it over the side.

I'd get a Spyderco Salt. (The yellow-handled ones in the photo.) My experience with Leatherman knives has been poor. The ones I've had tend to rust easily.

I have to agree...the Yellow handled H-1 Pacific Salt SE might be the perfect choice. The bright yellow would be easier to find were it to drop in the water, but you might want to put a floating keyfob on it.

I'd 2nd or 3rd the recommendations for a Spyderco Salt in whatever version suits your fancy. The Spyderco Pacific Salt SE with the Yellow FRN handle is what I got for my Dad who lives on the Oregon coast and is an avid salt water fisherman.

I had a Leatherman Juice C2. I loved it until I lost it. I know Leatherman knives/tools are not the best but I beat them hard and never had a failure. This being said I do have a kit I use when I am rigging a boat and it has a marlinspike, and a fixed blade which was made for me by a true Salty Dog. I just need a folder to clip to my pocket. Also sometimes I crew and often we are not allowed to carry a fixed blade.

H1 is the only steel that I've never been able to rust at all; under normal wet, even salty, conditions it is actually an impossibility. If you spend that much time around water, it's well worth trying out. If it must be made in the US, Benchmade makes a Griptillian in X15 that is supposed to be very similarly rust proof. It's more around $100 though.

Well, you could by 3 or 4 Leatherman Crater CEs for the price of a Salt folder. It'd be much less painful to lose a $14 knife than a $60 or $70 one. Guess it depends on your priorities. ;)
