A previous post got me thinking, I was ready to get a Edge Pro (Pro) until I read the review on the Skarb. I have a life time supply of "stone" stones, man made stones, diamond stones, Japanese water stones, and used stones I picked up used at the swap meet made of who knows what. I can use all of these on the Skarb, but (maybe I pick this apart more then it is worth) looking at the
design of the Skarb it looks like it would be hard to sharpen at the area closest to the handle because you wouldn't get full travel across your stone. By the looks of the design it appears that the first 1/4 inch of your blade (going from handle to tip) will only rub your stone for a 1/4 inch,
only until you reach 2 inches up the blade from your handle do you use the full potential of the 2 inches of stone. Most folders being under 4 inches you sharpen 1/2 your blade optimum performance and the 2 inches by the handle to a much lesser degree. Myself having never used either system (watched Edge Pro video) am wondering am I am nit picking the Skarb, is it a problem sharpening close to the handle? Lots cheaper to use my existing stones, but it is the best
end result I am really after.
I hope was able to explain this, I need a pen and paper...
Thanks, great board!

EDge,
Welcome to the forums.
First off let me say that I dont know anything about the Skarb and only a little bit about the Edge Pro. If you already have a life time supply of stones you might want to consider getting the Razors Edge guides. Its basically a clamp that you put on your knife. They come in two sizes and cost about $8.00 each. Once you have clamped one of the guides to you knife you start sharpening. It will help you maintain the same angle while you sharpen. One thing that I really like about these guides is that you can really PRESS the knife to the stone. My family and friends bring their knives to me for shaprining, usually when their knives are about as sharp as a butter knife!

I am not at my home computer so I am guessing at this link. WWW.RazorsEdge.com
Hopefully some one will jump in and answer your original question.

Welcome to the forums! Go for and Edge Pro Apex, you won't be sorry. Do a search in the Review Forum and you'll find a couple of my reviews. IMO it's the best sharpener.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

[The shaft on which the clamp rests will pivot 360 degrees. therefore when creating a burr on the first inch of the blade one simply raises the handle and concentrates on this area. if the 1/2" of the blade next to the handle is critical for use, simply lower the handle and sharpen this area along the edge of your stone. once the burr is up along the whole dege, simply moving the whole length of the blade across the stone will even out the whole burr.QUOTE]Originally posted by EDge Sharpen:

Skarb,

I think you got it wrong on the way the Skarb works. All the blade gets sharpened from the tip to the end. I don't think that stroke direction or length of stroke matter, you are just trying to get a burr. You can work at any spot by changing the angle of the knife to stone. The only folder I have had a problem with is the BM710 because the blade flares at the end and you can't keep the bevel as even as the rest of stone.

You can use all your stones but those over 2 inches wide need to be clamped to hold them. I may build a jig to get around this. (If you read my review I used a round diamond rod and triangular spderco ceramic stones to do the 710). Waterstones are problematic because you are wearing a thin arc into the stone.

I have both the Edge Pro and the Skarb and have not decided on which is best. I am trying to locate an ultra-fine Spyderco benchstone so I can sharpen on both to more or less the same polish.
