Hello everyone out there, in the world of all things sharp and shiny. Im a new member, and have come to this forum in dire need of help to fulfill a quest. I am recreating the battery of hunting knives that my father had, and cant seem to get past the chinese imports that are being passed off as real knives( I know, some of them are all right, but this is my daddy's knives we're talk'in about here). It's almost like a firewall to keep me away from real American quality. I am looking for a Schrade Deerslayer, a model 171-u, (what they are calling the pro hunter today), and an antique Buck 110. Nothin fancy, and yes they will be used, in the hunting field as well as overseas(National Guard).I would like something as close to new condition as possible. I have Ontario knives that i use for abuse, but this is a part of my childhood I would like to pass on to my own boy. if anyone can help it would be really appreciated.

I would check out ebay. There are a lot of vintage Shrade/Old Timer/Uncle Henry knives that come up for auction there. Lots of vintage Buck 110's, as well.

As you may know, the Imperial-Schrade Corporation went out of business in 2004. eBay really is your best bet for finding original pre-2004 Schrade knives. You will need some skill at distinguishing the original knives from the modern imports; some sellers aren't entirely up-front about their knives' origins. For that, check out the Schrade Collectors sub-forum here at BladeForums - those guys really know their stuff.

You might also try posting a topic here in the "Wanted" forum section.

And just a note about imports: Some of the new Schrade knives have been contract-made by American manufacturers. Additionally, the original Schrade Corporation had a long history of importing knives from all over the world well before 2004: Mexico, Ireland, Germany, and even China.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

I'm not a big fan of Flea-Bay, and much prefer dealing with folks here on Bladeforums. Check the for-sale individual subforum regularly, as well as the dedicated Buck for-sale forum.

If you can accept gently used, you'll find something much quicker and for less $$$. I have a couple of used 110 two-dots (late 70s), and the fact they've seen some use adds character, IMO. Same with old Schrades.

Also, consider aiming for a 152OT Schrade Sharpfinger--lots more of those around than Deerslayers. The 152OT is a very capable knife--that and the 110 have probably processed more deer in this country than all other knives combined. Something else you might consider is looking at Buck fixed blades--not only do vintage Buck fixed blades show up on the forums, but Buck still makes the traditional models (119, etc.) in the USA.

Good luck!

There are a lot of them on ebay and i seen some sell in the productions knives for sale.

You should have no problem finding one in the knives WTB forum.

Also , the current production Buck 110's are still made in the USA ( in case you don't want to compete with collectors on the auction sites).

Excellent point. The old ones are cool as users and collectables, but the new ones are excellent too. And then there's the Buck Custom Shop!

All this moaning would mean more if Schrade isn't now owned by Taylor Brands, an American company. Blame Taylor for the crap quality of current Schrade knives, they have the choice of rejecting inferior knife shipments if they wanted to, or perhaps they only care about selling cheap knives to make a quick buck?

I am greatly pissed-off at the quality of current Taylor Schrades, especially since my father's favorite knife was a Schrade, but I know it is because Taylor Brands that is willing to run this brand into the ground.
