I plan on cutting down another 20 or 30 elm trees this spring and am looking for a large heavy-duty knife or small thick machete that I can use to whack the snot out of the smaller, one or two inch branches (ones to small for the chain saw because of their "whippiness" and too green to bend and break). Any good snot-whackers out there at a reasonable price? Thanks.

You plan on batoning or truly snot-"whacking"?

For true "whacking" go get a cheap Buck 119, rough up the handle for a better grip and swing away. Thick, heavy, cheap...

little short wouldn't ya think?

the Ka-bar would be a good choice. One of CS's cheapies or a cheap ol' axe from a local hardware.

I know the exact thing that you're looking for! You should get the Ka-Bar kukri. It's the perfect thing for chopping anyhting from small branches to thick trees. I've cut down trees 5 inches in diameter with mine. The blade will keep it's edge very nicely. I've had mine for a long time now and cut many trees/ limbs down and the blade still cuts the hair off my arm! The handle is amazingly comfortable and nicely designed. The weight of the blade combined with the handle makes even the most awkward cuts a breeze! The weight of the blade also makes it easy to make deep cuts in wood with only wrist movemenst. It doesn't get tiring for a very long time. If you read on wikipedia about the origin of the kukri you will find that it is expertly designed for chopping. It was originally used by the gurkahs( I think my spelling's off) in the mountains of nepal. It was used to cut heads off. Infact there was a ceremonial kukri that we longer than most and was used to cut the head off a water buffalo! In the ceremony the weilder of the weapon would cut the water buffalo's head off with one blow! The Ka-bar kukri is not this large, however. The overall length is 17" and it's made from 1085 high carbon steel. It's gat a Kraton G handel and a black epoxy coated blade. This is an extremely nice peice of equipment and it'll do anything you want it to. If I was stuck in the woods for the rest of my life with only one knife, it'd be a Ka-Bar kukri. I hope that this info has been helpful.:)

Buck and Gerber make folding saws that are real nice rippers for such chores.I have an old Buck saw,but i saw at the gun show today they have a new one from (hate to say it)CHINA that looked great and was cheap.

fiskars loppers would be less work and more efficient

I had to clear out a bunch of Youpon last weekend and used my 16-inch chainsaw. I was easily done before lunch.

The best part was that I did not have to go sharpen my knives when I was done. :)

For lopping off 1-2 inch branches not much will beat a well sharpened tramontina 18 inch machete. Around 6 bucks locally, great for various other yardworking tasks.

Use what has worked for the past 70 years, a Woodman's Pal. It was designed to do exactly what you described.

Yup, what I use. . .plus it makes that cool 'shiiing' sound when you swing it!:)

For one-two inch branches, I would go with light and long. Speed (including tip speed) is much more essential than power on those. They will bend out of the way if you use a heavier (potentially more powerful) tool. I would suggest a golok or machete instead of the heavier hard use knives. Just my $0.02.

gotta go with abs on this one - the woodsman pal is the perfect tool for what you want to do. You can work all day with that baby
