Hullo,

i've been looking into things again, and i've yet to make the big purchase of a sharpener.

Here's this situation:

what I basically want is a Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker, some coarse stones for it, and a fine stone for serrations. What should I do? (and can we please try to keep the price down :))

You're all over the forum tonight! Good questions, though ... :)

Go for the Sharpmaker. It does serrations very well. Its only drawback would be reprofiling, that is, if you have a really dull knife that needs a lot of work to get a good edge on it, or if you want to change the angle of the edge. Spyderco is supposed to come out with diamond rods for this, eventually.

But, as is, for maintaining an edge, whether plain or combo or fully serrated, it works just fine. Its easy and quick to use, and once you get comfortable with the suggested technique for regular knives, you can play with it for other equipment, too. The video shows you how to sharpen scissors, chisels, and nail clippers. Seriously! I sharpened my nail clippers, and it made a big difference.

There are other, very similar systems available. The Sharpmaker is at least as good as any of them. Should go for about $50. Try Bayou Lafourche. You might want to pick up a Gatco Tri-Seps, also, which is like a short section of Spyderco tri-angle rod, with rubber grips at each end. It's a good portable touch-up, for about $10, I think.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 is what you NEED. As a bonus, the Sharpmaker will also sharpen plain-edged blades very well, and the video that comes with it will entertain and enlighten you.:).

Heh, shank you for all the good info, now I can buy a 204 with a secure, warm feeling :)

Esav,
you're right, I couldn't sleep last night, so I decided to just go ahead and post all my questions and see what I got :) Looks like I got alot :)

Just adding my recommendation for the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's a great tool and has excellent supportuing documentation (video and booklet).
KnifeCenter has them for $46.95.
The diamond tri-angles are due out in early 2002. They will fit the curent model as an add-on.
Enjoy,
Stogie
