I'm looking at putting together an extra large family first aid kit. Something that will cover anything short of surgery. The thing is I cant afford to buy a pre-made mega kit so I'm gonna have to go piece by piece. I could use some links to trusted places.....

Don't forgett to find a doctor to perscribe some penecillin for your kit (or just go to mexico) as well as any other medications your family needs. Thats something that people always seem to forgett.

Here's a way my friend got free stuff when he was putting his together. When ever he would go visit someone in the Hosp he would raid the room for stuff. There always some gauze, tape, band aids, maybe even a stethascope<sp?. He has also been known to come back from a doc app with some stuff. I never tried doing that. I just can't take anything that wasn't given to me or paid for by me.

In a city your size, there has to be a medical supply house that will carry better first aid supplies.

Sometimes pharmacies linked to hospitals will carry more than bandaids and gauze.

There is a place in town that sold me the individual use triple antibiotic packets for $.02, and had Biersdorf products on the shelf.

ALso, watch for store closings that carry first aid products. Can often get a deal there.

I used a book called "Wilderness Medicine" by Dr. Forgey I believe. Has some good insight into multi-functional items, which reduce kit bulkiness.

He has a website. I'll look it up and try to post it. The book should be at your local bookstore.

Good luck.

I've been searching for "refills" for my kit.

I've run across some interesting things.

REI has some reasonable prices on some of their first aid things.
Amazingly, I've seen 2.00 for 10 pack of Triple Antibiotic Ointment

If you are looking for a car kit, they seem to have one one sale here:

Most premade kits are horrible. I'm sure this one is the same, but it might get you started.

Shipping is reasonable, but you can pick it up for free if you have an REI near you..

Just some more to think about.

What are you looking for? Being a Paramedic I can recommend a few things. Most items are not cheap, as far as meds you have to watch for expiration dates and the big thing would allergic reactions. I don't know what kind of training you have. If not I would recommend an EMT class which is far better than any first aid class. Check with your local fire dept. or state EMS office they can direct you.
Things I would get are:
Kling
4x4's
tape
band aids( you would be surprised how hard these are to find in my squads!)
Sam Splints these are the best thing on the market! They are made of thin aluminum that you can bend in any direction.
Some kind of mouth barrier if you plan on any cpr on someone you don't know.
A bag valve mask if you can find one. These can be pricey and you should know how to use one. But, these are the best way to go instead of mouth to mouth.
Antiseptic hand cleaner
sting eze for bee stings
I would do a search for ems medical supplies and shop around. I know these places won't sell any meds without a drug license on file.
Hope this helps.

I used to be an EMT-I. I still keep the jumpbag handy. I use Moore Medical to get gloves etc. They have a minimum order for free shipping. They have BVM's, gloves, most anything needed. I second the EMT class instead of First Aid course. Just get a part time job or volunteer to keep your certs

Does he leave a nice note so that the next patient in that room understands why he has to WAIT and bleed for ten minutes while they restock the room?

Looks like I'm getting the M3 medical kit from JRH http://www.jrhenterprises.com/medical.html it's close to what I'm looking for and I can add other odds and ends as I figure out what else I'll need. I've got a friendly doctor that will hand me samples for medicines for alergies, antibiotics, and other stuff that I might need. I was suprised at the cost of this whole kit cause brigade quatermasters sale the bag alone for 20bux.

C_yeager obviously hasn't been in an American hospital recently. You can sit there and bleed for 10 hours without anyone noticing. And you can bet that someone is paying for all the stuff that guy is stealing, too. My wife was in the hospital for three days last year, and when the bill came, there were 371 separate pharmacy charges. 371! Sheesh, don't get me started....
