i need a strop to maintain my bark river bumble bee. i made one out of an old leather bracelet and put some "turtle" polishing compound on it but it just does not seem to work. i was thinking about buying a leather belt to make a new one because purchasing a real stop off the internet is not an option. do you guys think a belt like this would work? it is quite stiff leather. and is there any other sort of compounds i could use that i could find locally?

Have you tried hunting Ebay for a used one? Some nice ones sell cheap and would probably be cheaper in the long run than a homebrewed one. If you must use a belt, try to find a weightlifting belt, they are best.

i live in a small town in canada. limiting my online choices. and i dont want to go through mailing money as i dont have credit cards or paypal.
so i assume this type of belt would not work?

Do you have any type of leather working, hobby, saddle...stores around?

Any of those should have leather either as scrap or otherwise.

I bought my leather for my strops from the scrap bin at Tandy Leather.

For compound I use red and white polishing compound from Sears. I would think that most hardware or home improvement stores should carry or know where to get polishing compound. If they sell grinders and buffing wheels they should have it.

I make strops out of belts and they work just fine. Try and find a belt without stitching, or pull it all out, (I've done both) glue it, or stretch and fasten it to a backer block and go to town on it. I have several loaded with various grit compounds from #1 coarse to #6 green which is super fine.

Good Luck,
Beckerhead

A simple piece of cardboard will work as a strop, as will a leather belt. Polishing compound, while helpful, is not necessary.

Yes, try a saddle shop or boot and shoe repair shop and craft store. They should have some 9-10oz. leather that will work. A piece 3"x 15" you'll appreciate how it works.DM
