"I need a..." style of question and solution

I've noticed recently a glut of posts following in the "OMG I NEED A NEW KNIFE I HAVE $X TO SPEND WHAT IS GOOD?"

I have decided to start a spread sheet with recommendations from those threads. Eventually this could be a nice tool we could use to help people decide on a specific knife. Then maybe we'd see more model specific discussion instead of "I need a knife, what's good".

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqBh_I7DZaVGdDhxc3NfWXdnNUtUa3I5V0RvdTJfNkE

Does listing the price (but not link) from a vendor on the spread sheet count as price spotting? I want to be able to say the approximate price and where I saw the price.

It can be sorted by each category. Allowing users to browse by brand, price, steel type, use, etc.

Is there anything other information that should be included on the sheet to make it more useful?

Keep in mind I've only spend about 20 minutes on this, I don't want to spend a load of time if people think this wouldn't be worthwhile.

That's a cool idea, just leave out vendors and give an estimated street price.

Not to sound rude. As a beginner, your head is reeling with questions, and unknown factors. It is nice to be able to ask people what their thoughts are on a blade and get opinions. No offense, but what you are starting isn't much different than a new person browsing through websites on their own ( which is the likely cause why there are now asking on here ). I know the threads pop up alot. But I don't mind answering the questions. I cringe when I think about my first few noob threads here. I think my first day I had about three threads going with all my questions.

I respectfully disagree, although I can see why you might think this. This isn't meant to dissuade 'newb' threads but to act as a resource that stimulates discussion beyond "What should I get". The knives that go on there are ones that are suggested frequently by senior members here.

My bad. I believe I misunderstood the original intention. Not a bad idea after some thought :D. I am tired lol.

No worries, I value the input. I'm just trying to feel out if people would find this useful or not. Don't want to put effort into it if people think it is lame.

I like this idea. You should add handle material and handle length to it.
