Can you guys recommend a good quality light 2 person tent for backpacking?

budget.

$29 ?Wegner? Campmore. Tight 2 person. 3 lb. Stands right up in gale force wind. Old pup tent format.

Bivies I've had felt like coffins while waiting out a hard rain. :(

I'm sure there are many better, but...$29 for 3#? works for me.

Good luck.

The Kelty Teton 2 Tent at Campmor runs for $109.97 ...quality brand under 5 lbs.

Sounds like what you're looking for.

You can take a look at the EMS tents, but I not sure they will fit your budget or bill. My 2 person 4 season has been used and abused for....... 13 years now, and my 3 person 4 season for 19+ years thru all type of weather including blizzards and hurricane force winds in the White mountains and has never needed a repair.

Both were purchased at the time on Close out, the 3 person was closer to $250, the 2 person was around $175+/- but the long life speaks for itself. At $119, the EMS escape is a hell of a tent for the money. But... well all of these are fairly heavy to care, I think the escape is around 5lbs. Over the years I have purchased Kelty, Hard Mountain Gear, and MSR tents, and one after another has failed, so i go back to my EMS tents.

Hope this is helpful... and not too bais. :)

the solitare (Just me) and tetragon 5 (me and wife) are what use

both have performed very well so far and are fairly easy to set up quickly and will not kill your budget

Look seriously at the Eureka Spitfire 2. Great tent for the money!! Decent sitting height. large door, and aluminum poles.

I'd look at rei.com/outlet as well as the clearance section on campmor.com. You can find some real nice tents in there at a great price. rei.com/outlet has 4 pretty decent ones on there right now in your price range, and even more for just a tad more.

Thanks guys. I'm currently researching the recommendations that were made. there are a lot of good options.

Hey INFI,

About twice your budgeted amount but the North Face Tadpole 23 is a hell of a tent. It holds 2 people weighs about 4 lbs and 15oz has a vestibule you can get 1 pack maybe 2 under and is awesome in the rain.

When I researched it almost every review I found was favorable and I have to concur.

I've had one for about 5 years and sometimes I leave it home cause i have lighter tents, but in rain and bad weather it can't be beat.

I have a Kelty Teton 2 which I picked up for a great price locally. I have been very happy with the tent. Easy set up, secure tent that has shed rain and wind well and plenty of room for 1 plus a pack. A snug fit for 2.

check out the craigslist as well ... you can find some great deals on there..

We used to use a two-man Eureka 'Timberline' for many years as a three season tent. Went up easily, carried light, and stayed up in those horrible storms you get in the White Mountains. Getting older, we switched to a dome-style tent and never looked back. The extra room of an octagonal dome compared to a rectangular 'pup tent' was a blessing and was worth the extra pound weight. I let my buddy carry the fly and that made up for it. We re-sealed the seams every 2-3 years, maintained strict tent discipline (no boots inside, no food stored or eaten inside. We used a different tent in winter, a Sierra Designs dome, and didn't have to worry about bears.) and always used a ground sheet under them. We spent 25 years backpacking with those two tents and never had a problem. When car camping with my wife, (she doesn't like to carry a backpack,) we use a four-man dome with a vestibule and awning. We still maintain strict tent discipline, but a lot more giggling... ;)

Wasnt sure if I should start another thread or just jump in on this one (let me know if this is faux pas)

Anyway, I'm in the market for a new 1 person tent. What are the differences between a 3 season and 4 season? Are they just more rugged and have closeable mesh screens? I'm leaning towards a 4 season for the versatility and so I dont have to buy another tent if I happen to need a 4 season. I'd be willing to spend about $300, what are your picks?

I've got one. Deff a nice tent. Freestanding, too.
I'd be inclined to say you could get two packs into the vestibule, though I haven't tried it.

That looks like a decent tent, however 8.5lbs is nowhere near "light" which was one of the OP's requirements.

A 4 season tent usually has more and/or thicker poles and is designed to stand up to higher winds and a snow load. Along with having closeable panels over the mesh they typically have less mesh so they don't ventilate as well when it gets hot. 4 season tents are usually heaver and more expensive than a comparable 3 season tent. Normally I would say unless you plan on doing a lot of cold weather camping you're better off with a 3 season tent, although with you being in Canada the ventilation might not be as big a concern.

I really like Mountain HardWear tents and those would be the first ones I'd look at if I was in the market for a new tent. I know they make some 3 season ones in your price range.

For a 2 man tent, I have a Eureka Mt. Pass II XT tent. I believe it is discontinued now, but some may be around. 6lb or slightly less, and 3+ season. It has plenty of mesh, but it can all be zipped up tight for cooler weather. I really like this tent.

For a 1 man, I just bought an REI Chrysalis at REI outlet. Don't know anything about it, but it is a 1 man 3lb tent w/ a vestibule. I liked the look of the fly and floor in the pics, but don't know anything about it yet, as I don't think it has even been shipped. 114 bucks. If it is as good as my 3 man REI tent, it will be fine.
