I need a wedding present... for myself.

Hey guys,

Well, I finally tied the proverbial knot last Saturday, so I'm now able to report in as a happily married man. :)

My wife is very supportive of my knife carrying and buying habits, so I'm very lucky. That being said, I'd like to pick myself up a wedding present of some sort, and I'd definitely like to get a slippie.

My normal EDC is a Case Trapper in green jigged bone, and a Vic Classic SD (also a Vic Swisstool Spirit+). I'd like to get something smaller than the trapper, with either three or four blades (Congress?), so I can have different blades for different tasks like food prep, whittling, box opening, etc. I like bone or stag scales. Here's the kicker, though. My wife is fresh out of college and hasn't been able to start a job yet, and I don't exactly make a killing at mine. Pair that with saving up for a wedding reception in a couple months and trying to buy a house, and we're pretty strapped. Soooo, my budget for said knife is about $35, tax title and license.

Any suggestions? I love my Cases, but I don't think I'll be able to find a congress in that price range.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

Case Amber Bone and Red Bone series run in the mid $40 range. Unless you buy used, i don't think you are gonna find bone or stag for $35. Other brands I'm not sure, but i doubt it.

Well it doesn't have to be bone or stag, really. I was just stating a preference. I'd like to spend some more on this knife, but it really wouldn't be prudent.

So other handle material would be definitely acceptable if anyone has any suggestions. I'm not limiting myself to Case, either. I'm fairly new to slip-joints, though, so I just own Cases because I knew they were very reputable.

Thanks!

Hey, Parke1, how many times do you plan on getting maried? What I'm saying is, why limit yourself to $35? You splurged for the gold membership, so money can't be THAT tight, right? I'm not saying you should drop the kind of coin that's going to get you a Bose, but there are some nice Queen's, Schatt & Morgan's, and several German made slipjoints that are as good or better than Case that won't break the bank, either.

Splurge, dude! Let this knife be a testament to how much you love your wife(and yes, that excuse can be used over and over).

BTW good luck, I remember how it was with cash when I first got married. It will get better, but be patient you will be making a lot of sacrifices early on.

never.to.sharp, I bought my gold membership a couple of months ago. Money has become tighter since then. I may be able to squeeze a little more out of the funds, but doing so excessively is not a prudent thing to do. If I wanted to, I could order a Bose with no problem, but I'm saving money for our wedding reception/party, and that's the top priority.

Everyone else, I thank you for your suggestions. I'll be looking into each and every one listed.

Thanks again!

Skip the reception & put the savings toward the house. Gotta have your priorities when $ is tight. Now ya just gotta convince the wife. I'm sure you'll get plenty of good knife suggestions, so I won't chime in on that. Congrats & good luck!

How about a nice carbon steel Boker whittler?

$29.99 on their website (under discontinued/sale)

ooohhh, that's a nice looking boker. I think we may have a winner...

Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

You might want to try looking around locally. They're wood handled, but lots of stores carry some budget Buck slipjoints like Gander Mountain and Walmart. Also, try browsing Kame's Sporting Goods if you're ever in the area. They have a nice selection of Buck's and Cases, among a couple other brands. Might find something you like and get to handle it in person too. Kame's is just a bit southeast of the Akron / Canton airport, if you take Mt. Pleasant road east from the Timken plant you'll see it on your left once you hit the light at Cleveland Ave.

Parke1 - Congrats on the tying the knot....

But,Your new wife is your wedding gift, stop making excuses to buy a new knife, just buy them all year round.

VCM3, lol! You're right. I did just acquire a RAT-3 the day before I was married, I have to admit.

Vivi, thanks for the recommendations. I'm very familiar with Kames and Gander Mountain (I used to work for them both at one time, selling guns). I've found both of their knife selections to be a bit lacking, though. Kames used to be great, but I've found them to be dwindling lately. BTW, you post alot in W&S. What woods around here do you frequent? My wife and I both love hiking and spending time outdoors, but other than Quail Hollow, we're kind of out of places to loaf around.

Thanks again everyone!

I picked up a little Buck Trio recently, and I must say that I'm really happy with it. For $15 at Wal-mart, it's got more than decent F&F, and it's plenty useful.

Congrats on the marriage!

Congrats on the marriage and on marrying someone who is supportive of your knife passion.

Plenty of excellent suggestions here. I've gotten several knives off ebay for a great price. You just have to be willing to hold to your chosen limit until you finally land one at the price you are willing to go with.

Congrats again on the wedding!!
I'd also recommend a Boker Whittler. I have three and have been really impressed with them. The washboard bone (bottom in the pic) looks very, very nice. All three of them are snappy with good springs and no bladeplay, excellent values all in all. I also included a Hen and Rooster congress. The handles are celluloid or some such thing, but the knife is awesome. It has excellent walk and talk with half stops, the fit and finish were perfect. I don't remember what I paid, but it couldn't have been much more than your budget. Whatever you decide on, you should post a pic when you get it.

Be aware, these are made in China. I hear good things about the quality. Still, some guys (myself included) are not comfortable with the notion of carrying a Chinese-made Buck knife. YMMV.

Ok, time for a follow-up.

I tried to order the Boker whittler listed above, but after not receiving any order confirmation, I called them up. Turns out their computer system messed up and lost my order. They offered to place an order for me over the phone, but then it turned out that they were all out of the whittler that I wanted. I told them I'd make up my mind and call them back.

Long story short (too late), I wound up browsing around on smokey mountain's website and ordered a EZE-LAP diamond hone and a Case yellow Peanut in CV. Can you tell I want to be just like jackknife when I grow up? :D

I should get the new case around the middle of next week, so I'm pretty excited about that. Now I just have to start practicing my whittling skills.

Thanks again for the advise, folks. I'll be sure to post a couple pictures when she arrives.
