My ultimate sharpness test when I've REALLY sharpened and stropped a blade is to fish for one of my girlfriends long hairs under her pillow or in the bathroom sink. I hold it, suspended, by one end and take a swipe at it. If the bottom falls off and if I'm able to repeat that one or two more times I conside my blade perfect.
On the other hand, for anywhere BETWEEN that and dull, I shave my arm hair. Now, I sharpen and strop my knives often and according to my girlfriend I have "furry cuffs" and I guess that's true. I have good hair near my wrists. Above that my arms are a mix of "smoother than a baby's behind" and a mixed array of different lengths of stubble.
It works for me. I'm able to tell the different sharpness of my knives based on how well they're able to pop different lengths of hair off my arm and how much effort it takes. I've done this for quite a while and have gotten this down to quite a science that's been serving me rather well.
Well, the other day at a business seminar I noticed the woman sitting next to me was staring at my arms with a strange look on her face.
I started to take a closer look at myself, and frankly, I think there are some, let's say, "social drawbacks" to having habitually shaved arms.
I'd like to switch habits but I don't know what else to do.
I've tried shaving chest or belly hair, but my girlfriend finds that, especially, distasteful. (Especially when she feels that stubble against her skin on occasion if you know what I mean.)
Leg hair? Well, maybe. I MAY go there.
Is there another way?
Paper? I've tried that, briefly, and it doesn't seem as sensitive.
Fingernails? Same thing.
I could shave the cat but I don't think she would sit still for that and, after all, it's difficult to close a wound on a furry animal.
Are there any other good methods out there or do you pretty much agree with me that arm hair is the most accurate way?
