where and which files for good square jimping on thumbramps? i want to make nice small square bottom cuts. i use chainsaw files for rounded jimping.

where is the bes place to buy these files and what kind do i need? im kind of at a loss.

I think brownells checkering files are what you are looking for. I have no experiance with them but that is what jumped into my head.

Checkering files are cut at an angle (usually 60 degree). You could make your own, but you probably want a thin square cut file like is used for cutting slots. See Brownells.

Note many gunsmiths prefer to use a jewlers saw for this type of work (slotting screw heads, etc.).

Maybe what you're looking for is some sort of abrasive wheel on a small hand-held grinder????

Or if you have access to a mill just make some passes with the appropriate size end mill.

HELP!
I need some files....HELP!
Not just any files....HELP!
You know i need some small ones ....HEEELLLPPP.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I would take a file , and stroke it both ways.
Those days are gone, and I now know there is much more.
I stroke the file just one way, and do it very sure.

Help me find the files that I really need,
Help me make some jimping that will really please,
Help me get the groove bottoms flat with ease,
Won't you pleee-ease help meeee.

The files that you want are used in jewelry stores,
Grobet and others make them ,and they really do the chore,
Rio Grande and others sell them by the score,
I hope this helps you find what you need.

Use a warding file for big and wider slots,
Use a tapered knife edge shape if the bottom is not
There are other shapes that will file any slot,
Just look up Grobet, and you can see.

hahahahahah that's great Stacy. As he said, jewelers files or needle files will work just as well as a checkering file for a lot less money.
