I need to find someone who can help me read a file with Microsoft Excel. I don't need Excel for anything other than this otherwise I would purchase it. Can anyone help me?

Download OpenOffice. You can read and edit Microsoft Office files and best of all it's free.

OpenOffice is definitely the way to go. I've also had good luck using Gnumeric, but that's more for linux. IBM also has their own office suite, known as Lotus Notes. Haven't tried that one out, but I've heard it works well, though OpenOffice still trumps them all.

If you only need to read the file and not edit it, you might be able to find an "Excel 2007 Reader" as a free download from Microsoft. Failing that, yes, by all means try Open Office.

I assume you're running some version of Windows.

OpenOffice is an excellent suite of apps, but very overkill for one document.

Google Docs supports CSV files. Just upload it and Google will convert it to their spreadsheet format and let you view and edit in the browser.

Or, if you just need one bit of info, CSV is actually a plain text file format, the CSV standing for comma-separated-value. If you consider that every comma is a column separator, you can find what you need in notepad.

Hi white_feather -

A csv file is just a plain text file with comma separation (Comma Separated Value).

You can read this file with any common text editor (notepad, for instance).

The comma's are there to allow import to excel or a database software.
