If you want to shoot for the stars, a 2x72 can be done cheaply. It'll take some doing to find the parts this cheap, but it is possible. http://dcknives.blogspot.com/p/budget-2-x-72-belt-grinder-build.html?m=1
Otherwise, you can get a 2x42 for about 200. Better than the 1x30, but also runs at light speed only, just like the 1x30. To an extent you'd be facing the same issue using a single speed motor on the cheap 2x72, but I would get an 1800 rpm motor if I could only have one. That's what I ran before I upgraded to a VFD. The only issue was that the single speed was a harbor freight motor that overheats in 5 minutes.

i do not think you can find a "good" one for that. i guess it depends on your opinion of good, and how many attachments you need. i made knives from 2004 to 2015 as a part time hobbyist on a 4x36. when i got the KMG grinder, it was a game changer. now there are many brands that make good ones in that price range.

Short answer? No.
You can get a 1x30 for about $60 these days, but I honestly wouldn't bother.

You probably won't find much better for the money, and for $500, when I was starting out, I would have jumped on it for sure.
