I'm wanting to purchase a new knife. I am looking for something in the 350.00-500.00 range tops. I tried the Chris Reeves small Sebenza 31 and I could not see paying that much for a knife that has so much up and down blade play. I would like something with a blade length between 3-3.5 inches. this will be used for EDC. I work in the yard, hunt, hike and other normal things. So give me your thoughts. Fixed or folder it doesn't matter, I want to see what suggestions you all can give me. Thanks guys/gals for your input.

My first thought is that if you have a lot of up and down blade play on the sebenza, that's definitely not normal. Never had any on the multiple I've owned, so you may wanna send that in for a warranty claim or spa treatment. Now as far as your inquiry goes, there are lots of options in that price range. My personal choices to handle all of those tasks well would be: Hinderer XM-18, Toor Admiral, Spartan Harsey Folder, Quiet Carry Drift, Liong Mah Field Duty EDC, and just a bit bigger than 3.5" blade the CRK Umnumzaan. Concerning fixed blade options, with a price range like that you could get one of these knives plus a great fixed blade no matter which one you choose.

spartan harsey 3.25 version worth a look. I have a full size plain jane one. no movement at all. an incredible knife in your price range.

ZT 0350, or 0562, well built and versatile folders for the elements.
Rick Hinderer XM 18 Slicer, pretty much as same category as the ZT 562, also take a look at the
‘Jurassic frame model. Little bit on the expensive site but you didn’t say how much you want to spent.
Of the cheaper lines, Spyderco Manix 2 or XL may suits you, worth to check also Ontario Rat 1 in D2,
well suited knife for outside work.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'm gonna research some of these and see what I can find. As far the blade play on the Sebenza it was a brand new small 31. And from my research on them that seems to be the norm on the small 31 these days. I wish it wasn't that way because I really wanted a Chris Reeve. But now I'm kind of scared to spend the money on another one of his knives.

For that much money, you can get one of the talented people here to make you a custom small fixed blade that's exactly what you want. If you hunt I'd definitely get fixed blade...cleaning organic gunk out of a folder is not fun.

Try Danijel from malanika malanika , I always recommend him his blades are gorgeous and cost falls in your budget.

Good luck!

Another vote for ZT 0562. I have one and it's my go to EDC right now. And fyou will have some left over based on your price range.

For $500 you can buy one of 95% existing knives Worldwide !
Be more specific, please ?

I would give serious consideration to the 3.25 Spartan Harsey. It appears to me to be right in that small Sebenza wheel house. I have the larger version which is a little bigger than the large and it is a fantastic knife.

If you already haven't tried one; I'd go with a Endura in the steel that fit your tasks the best.

If the blade is a tad long you have the Endela.

A little cheaper than your price range but, this is what first came to mind reading your OP.

Happy hunting!

😎👍

I suggest to get a Spyderco Manix 2 in a cool steel (~$200; M390, S90V, or Cruwear are my favorites) and a fixed blade from CPK (e.g., Kephart or BFK) or from one of our makers (~$300). Will cover everything you'll ever need.

Roland.

I suggest a Carothers DEK1 in D3V steel or AEB-L. There will be another preorder for them before long in the CPK forum if you want to get one the way you want it. Or they are sold all the time here on BFC. Maybe they will be offered in CPM-Magnicut also?

With that price range, I'd highly suggest a folder and fixed blade.

I might go with a Spyderco PM 2 with S45VN ($160ish) and Bradford Guardian 5.5 in 3V ($250ish). I think about a 5" fixed blade is ideal for most hiking/camping chores. I'm no hunter but the classic shape of the 5.5 should perform well with most hunting tasks. Heck, if you need a little skinner, still room in the budget.

There has to be something about these Carothers knives, they have taken off the last few years and are snatched up quickly. Good luck with your search.

My search? The DEK1 in the photo is my knife. I have the unbuffed black micarta scales on her in that photo. I ordered my knife and two more for my sons with the Swedge, Penetrator Tip. I also got Cocobolo scales for my knife like in this photo. I just bought a bunch of extra scales for myself and my sons.

My apologies, I was referring back to the OP’s comments on searching for a new knife. Yours are very nice. 🙂 I still like the look of the unbuffed micarta scales better.
