Hey guys, i'm trying to look for a good throwing knife. What I want is a 12-14" knife where it ways 1 ounce per inch. I've looked into the Condor dimissal throwing knife but they're out of stock, and i'm not sure on how good carbon steel takings throwing. Any thoughts? I'd really like to get Stainless steal cuz I think they would last a long time, what do you guys think? Is carbon steel a good metal for throwing? Can ya'll tell me what your favorite throwing knife is, where you got it.....or give me a link to a knife that you would reccommend? Thanks so much.

I'm no expert on throwing knives, but I don't think steel choice matters so much for a thrower. More a matter of heat treat and quality of manufacture. But you might get more help on the throwing knife sub forum Here

Do you throw spin or no spin style? You have a world options here..
I know that the mod of this forum is Bobby Branton who is a famous
knifemaker and makes very high quality throwing knives.. There is also
Flying Steel if you are a no spin thrower.. Cold Steel, The Condors
look nice too.. I'm no expert when it comes to steel, and I can't tell you
the best.. But, I do know that a lot of the good throwing knives are made
from high carbon & spring steel like 5160. Some are stainless, but to my
understanding, stainless is very hard steel and might not take
years of throwing abuse.. From my knowledge carbon steel is going
to be a better steel than stainless for a dedicated throwing knife.
I make my own no spin throwers spikes/knives from
01 drill rod and mild steel rods and flat stock.. It's A36/1018 mild steel
so it's not hardened or tempered, but it does take the abuse very well,
with the exception that it can bend, but it's easy to straighten mild steel.
It all depends on your needs and throwing style, and your budget of course..

Sorry I forgot to mention.......I use the spinning style, or where the blade makes a rotation before it hits the target. Dang you really think stainless won't hold up well? I'd figure that stainless could take tons of abuse so that's why I thought that it would be nice. Here i've done some searching and I came up with these 3 different knives. I'd appriciate your opinion on them. Here they are.

I personally was impressed by the look of the Condor knife dismissal. It looked nice and sharp and looks like it has a nice feel to it. But then I read that it will break after like 2 weeks of throwing and I didn't really like that. So I then looked into stainless steel and i really was impressed by the first link I sent. I really liked the design, it got great reviews, made with 420 stainless steal, and a 1/4" thick so I thought it might be pretty durable. What do you think. That last link i was kinda "meh" I mean they got great reviews but they just looked kinda cheap to me. So stainless isn't that durable eh? I"m sad to hear that. :( Please get mack to me :)

I'm a fan of the Cold Steel True Flight Thrower - not quite 12" long or 12 oz, spring temper carbon steel, and plenty durable.

Oh I have that one and it's pretty good. Definetaly true about the durability. But I think i'd like something that dosn't have such a thick handle and isn't as bulky I guess.........

I've never had the opportunity to throw a Branton knife,
let alone ever even see one in person.. I can only assume they
must throw amazingly well.. If you can afford them, then I
would venture to guess you'd love them..
I was reading on his site, he said he was dealing with health problems and things.
So I have no idea on the actual availability of his knives.

I'ved looked at that site and that i'm sorry to say is definetaly out of my price range. :( Sorry I just can't spend 95$ on one knife................

Any other thoughts? What are your guys favorite knives to throw or ones that you would reccommend that is like 30-40$ each.

The United Cutlery Gil Hibben Competition throwing knives are decent to practice with. They are relatively inexpensive, 12" long, and pretty stout.
