I found this on the internet and I don't understand if a bali is legal or iligal?
Colorado - Criminal Code Section 18-12-101. Definitions...
(e) "Gravity knife" means any knife that has a blade
released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of
gravity or the application of centrifugal force, that when
released is locked into place by means of a button,
spring, lever, or other device... (f) "Knife" means any
dagger, dirk, knife, or stiletto with a blade over 3-1/2
inches in length, or any other dangerous instrument
capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing
wounds, but does not include a hunting or fishing knife
carried for sports use. The issue that a knife is a
hunting or fishing knife must be raised as an affirmative
defense. (j) "Switchblade knife" means any knife, the
blade of which opens automatically by hand pressure
applied to a button, spring, or other device in its
handle... (a.3) "Ballistic knife" means any knife that has
a blade which is forcefully projected from the handle by
means of a spring-loaded device or explosive charge.
- 18-12-102. Possessing a dangerous or illegal weapon... (1)
As used in this section the term "illegal weapon"
[includes]... gravity knife, or switchblade knife... {or
ballistic knife}. (3) A person who knowingly possesses a
dangerous weapon commits a class 5 felony.
- 18-12-105. Unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon -
unlawful possession of weapons. (1) A person commits a
class 2 misdemeanor if he knowingly and unlawfully:
(a) Carries a knife concealed on or about his person...
(2)... affirmative defense... (a) A person in his own
dwelling or place of business... (b) A person in a private
automobile... (c) [written permit] (d) A peace officer...

Colorado Case Law:
"The definition of 'knife' in subsection (1)(f) of this
section is sufficiently specific to give fair warning of
the proscribed conduct and is therefore constitutional..."
(1992)

My police officer friend (patrols Colfax, a pretty bad street) with whom I go on ride-alongs with told me that it is the centrifugal force part that makes them illegal. I am going to try to see if I can get them on a technicallity: it oulaws "Gravity Knives" (switchblades included) and it describes what a gravity knife is, then it describes what a knife is which is a blade of 3.5" or longer, I am going to see if I would be able to carry a balisong if I ground the length of the blade down to less than 3.5", hopefully it'll work.

BTW, what city do you live in/near?

Oh hell yeh! More CO people! So you live in Ft. Collins? I live just south of you in Loveland. What I have learned with balis is if you want to buy go to Rocky Mt. Knife Co. up in estes park, not a bad selection but not the best prices (just retail which is not bad unless compared to some Internet sites)

What I have experienced with the laws is just be desecrate. I think it is leagal and ok (considering you can buy them) to have them in your house but not to carry. So carry at your on risk! Yeh I would not recommend walking down east colfax after curfew flipping a Bali

(Even though colfax really is not that bad (I've been on it a few times rather late), still would not recommend it (carrying it around too much), so be careful and don't get caught

Believe me, when you are there in the middle of the night there are shootings, stabbings (done with a crappy knife: one guy was stabbed in the lower back and had to go to the hospital and the lady got her cheek slashed pretty good, you could see the stuff dangling off of her chin, I was there) then colfax is pretty bad. You can see drunk people stumbling along next to the police car and everyone within a mile is glaring at you. It's a good thing I wear a bullet proof vest (shockplate included). I love being around cops and going on ride-alongs, it's the best thing in the world and ya never know what's gonna happen next.

Also, there is a small shopping mall across from Rocky Mtn knife co and on the 2nd floor there is a guy who sells better quality crappy balis (if that makes sense) for better prices. I'll get their address and phone to ya within the next few days.
