Hi. I'm glad I've joined this community. I'm very beginner on making knives and this is my first one. It's the design I made with laser cut. I need some tips on finishing it. It's length is 12.2 inch/310 millimeters and the blade's thickness is 0.275 inch/7 millimeters. what's you suggestion on how to make its handle and the blade bevel and etc... By the way it's made from a leaf spring. I only heated and flattened it. One gentleman told me to post it in "work in progress" part but I couldn't find it. Any suggestion will be appreciated so much!!;):)

I would grind the bevels with a 2”x72” belt grinder with ceramic abrasives starting at 36, then 60, 120 grit.
Then I’d heat treat it in a kiln.
I’d finish grind it after the heat treat and pick a handle out of either wood, g10, or micarta, fixing it to the steel with g-flex and fasteners.
I’d sand that with sandpaper working up the grits until I was satisfied with how it felt in hand and how it looked.
Then I’d sharpen it.
I’d probably make a sheath too.

Saldash, welcome to the forum. You should consider showing your support by purchasing a gold level membership especially if you intend to ask the knifemakers for advice.

S Saldash what are you trying to make? A Bowie, a chopper, a sharpened crowbar? Do you want a guard? Do you want to do scales/full tang, or hidden tang and fully sculpted handle? Or a frame handle with crazy inlay and carving all over it?

Is this your first knife? Your 85th?

There are so many options, without knowing what you are trying to do it’s hard to give good advice.

Ook. Thanks for the reply. You're right. This is my first knife ever. I need a hunting knife. A Bowie style is cool. But can I make a Bowie out of this? With existing shape and sizes? Yes I want to make a guard for it too. Scales too. You know, The problem that I think I'm facing with is the short part of blade for the handle. Am I right? Is it short doesn't this size make the handle loose? If yes what are the options to reinforce it? Should I weld a little metal to the end of it ot I just need to use a wood with hole in it to push the blade into it and glue and etc..? Thank you for being patient with my countless questions.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Ok so first things first...

As this is your first knife go simple. Make the handle of your knife about 5 inches long, so modify your blade length to make that happen.

Drill two or three holes, evenly spaced and centered on your handle. Get some wood or micarta blocks to use for handle scales.

Shape your bevels, use a belt grinder or files to do the shaping.

While working on that read the stickies up above the main shoptalk page, there are step by step instructions on how to make a knife. Follow them and you’ll be on your way!

Not to explain what specifically I want to do, That was my bad.
My tools are an Angle Grinder, Clamps, Drill, Welding machine. Unfortunately I don't have a belt grinder and all the troubles ;) start here. But I'll try my best to do it with angle grinder if you have any Idea on doing it with that. I also have a mass of walnut wood. Is it good for the handle? Anyway Thank you for sharing your useful information:)

I thought it is free to post threads and ask what you need to know. I'm so passionate about knives and If I could show my support by even donating to the site I would surely do that. I don't hesitate to spend money on the things I love, But I can't pay online cause I don't have access to any online payment method now. I don't know about future maybe I can solve this in future. But if I'm not allowed to ask help in the threads and if it's a law here, I'll respect that and stop posting for good.

Yeah I think keeping it simple is the the only chance for it to survive as my first knife. I think file is cool and I'll use a file to shape the bevels. I'll check out the main page. Thanks for your time. Long live beautiful knives

You know, Actually I was gonna make this design in the picture, With a more even curve and a blade exactly the size of handle. Not longer than it. but Laser Cut Operator made stupid mistakes and I had to change it so it ended up like this. But this design is so nice. It has a huge sense of authority. This picture:

There’s people that I’ve seen do their grinding with an angle grinder and it’s fantastic. It’s not ideal, but there’s no doubt it could be done. Your choice of walnut would make a great handle.

Yeah I've seen people doing it too. I'm hoping for the best. I designed this and I'm gonna make it tomorrow. For giving the proper angle to the blade bevels. There's a Hinge under the parts which hold the knife blade and I should fix the angle grinder some where and use this So I can give it the proper angle. Let's hope it's gonna work tomorrow before I sleep:D:D
