He wants a axe or tomahawk that he can keep on his Honda Pioneer 500. He wants to use it to clear some brush and stuff, but he also wants it to be a good thrower. Any suggestions?

For clearing brush, and also a good thrower. Maybe you want to look at what Estwing has available. He'll be hard pressed to break one of those. I've always been leery of tossing a conventional axe; one) the wood handle is susceptible to breakage and two) if the head misses the target or falls and then strikes a stone there is lots of filing involved to get rid of the obvious nick.
If throwing is not a high priority then maybe you want to consider giving him a Pulaski; they're 'handier than a pocket in a shirt' for serious grubbing and chopping. The Ojibway Indian foreman I had 45 years ago used to signal the end of a work day by soundly tossing a felling axe into the trunk of a big tree.

There are some hawk makers (like H&B Forge) putting polls on their hawks which I would think would strike the right balance for what you're talking about (light utility plus throwing) and for the right money. If you're thinking Christmas though, prolly not gonna make it with H&B. I'm kinda thinking like 300Six, a hawk is the only thing I would want to throw - handles are easy to replace on a hawk.

If you want to increase that budget a little bit, 2Hawks makes some in the $100-125 range

Someone already mentioned H&B Forge, which would be my recommendation as well. For throwing you definitely want an axe which is designed for it. A tomahawk is a prime example of this. A decent tomahawk is my all around favorite choice for an all around axe. Now if you're looking for a pure chopping and splitting tool a woodsman's axe or hatchet will typically do the job better, but probably won't throw worth a damn.

If your dad is around 45 he would love the H and B. Just print out a picture of the thing off the site and put it in the card with a note telling him it's on the way. I'm sure that'll suffice. We parents have plenty of patience when it comes to quality. It would be a much better gift than the Estwing because of the exclusivity and the traditional look. If you already bought the Estwing, that'll work too.

I think this is a great idea! I just received my second H&B and they are definitely worth the wait!
