Hello everyone. Im Victor a 20 years old Hungarian guy with just enough knowledge about the english language that maybe enough for some questions around here. I serve in the Hungarian army in an artillery unit and I would like to get a knife that is suitable for combat, campsite tasks and other cuting jobs (like cutting pieces of rag for gun maintenance etc) I read a lot about the bowie knives because they are the survivor knives of the old times and I thought that maybe the bowie will be the ideal knife type. Im sure that I can find a lot of people who know much more about knives than I do and I would appreciate any tips about knives that would be better for me. Thank you for helping advices in advance

I think the first thing to ask, Victor, is: are there any limitations to what you are allowed to carry by your military’s standards/rules?

You’re going to get a million responses here, all of them with perfectly reasonable rationales based on the experiences of our members, and there are a multitude of knives to choose from, but do you have any size/weight/feature/steel type parameters that might help everyone narrow down the field?

Hello.

So, the word "combat" has more than one meaning, here on Bladeforums.

If "combat" means "I want a knife that I can use to fight other people if I have to", we're not going to be able to give you a lot of help.

If "combat" means "a knife that can cut things, and also do things that should really be left to other tools", then we can help.

Fallkniven.

Cold Steel SRK, if you can get one.

I have heard that machetes are the preferred tool for your situation. About 50cm of blade and a spine with sawteeth.

Once again, Danke42 had to ruin our fun... I mean gave a perfect answer.

Budget?
More examples of use style?
Restrictions your country may have on ownership of knives?

It's gonna be the second one

In addition, what is easily available to you? There are tons of different blades available in the Western Hemisphere, that is the Americas, that probably are not easily available to you or if they are they will be much more expensive.
Manly Knives of Bulgaria is very well regarded, BPS knives in the Ukraine makes very good blades for not a lot of money.

Basically we don't have any limitations when we are out on deployment or exercise. The size and weight are not that important because I can stove it inside the fighting compartment so it's not a problem. Maybe it could help a little if it's a little bit shorter or I can fix it to my leg because inside the vehicles it's not that comfortable or easy to carry around things on your belt

I will check on those brands thank you. We have some good websites here that makes it easier to get your hands ön american knives

If you are looking for a largish American-style Bowie design as in the original post, Spanish makers Joker and Muela have some decent stuff.

Something larger, Becker BK7 or BK9
This is a BK9 with a smaller BK11

Google Terava Skrama, it has a good reputation for being a solid performer.

There are literally thousands of choices, limited only by your imagination and budget.
Don't go into situational overload or analysis paralysis choosing a knife.
Keep it simple, make sure it fits your needs.
If you intend to chop a lot of wood, get an axe.....Was your unit issued any sort of tools for clearing emplacements?
Don't go overboard on spending, especially in your working situation. Things have a way of getting
"lost", and losing a $100 knife vs a $300 knife will be a bit easier on your wallet....and cost is not necessarily and indicator of performance.

The gerber strongarm would probably be the budget friendly vanilla option. With stainless steel and a heap of mounting options.

It is a reputable knife you can't easily kill.
Great choice, also unfortunately one of the most counterfeited model. So buy from a reputable shop.
