I just acquired a Howling Rat that came with what the guy said was the original canvass (with kydex insert) sheath. I was not aware that SR ever offered the HR with a canvass sheath. But, there's more. I am looking at the blade and something strikes me as "funny". So I pull out my other one and the difference is immediately apparent.

The one I just got has a smaller choil--it it not as deep or large and it is farther back than the one on my other Howling Rat. The effect of this is that this newly acquired blade has an edge in front of the choil of 3 7/8" choil to tip versus 3 5/8" choil to tip on the second HR. Both have the original coating. So what is the story??? And if anybody wants me to post pics, I am not sure that I can, but I can send them to someone if they will post them.

Thanks!

The first (and I think second) batches of Howling Rats were made with the smaller choil. And the early ones came with the canvas sheath with kydex insert. Here's a pic that shows the differences.

Good score, brother!!

Wow, those could be mine but for one thing--my newer Howling Rat is sterile. How many sterile vs non-sterile blades were there???

Oh, and by the way, if you think getting the blade was a good score, I wish I could tell you what I paid for it. Try to think of it as something akin to a full-court swoosh, backwards and blindfolded!!!

Also, I was thinking about a little Circa 1850 to remove the coating on this one since it is fairly worn. Who thinks I should go for it???

I say go for it....you have 2. I love my 1st Gen HR. I actually like the sheath more than the new leather ones.....my next score hopefully is the Howling Fat.

My first rat was/is this sterile, first-gen small choil. It was the one that started the addiction. It still goes to work with me everyday in my EDC bag and has been used a lot. I actually bought a Holwing Fat to replace this one but found I liked my little first-gen HR better. The HF lives in Thailand, now.

Congrats! Use that baby!

Thanks for the info folks. I am even more excited now than when I originally was first in line for it!

And BTW, Paddling_man, love those pics!

I like the look of the early HR's better than the later ones. It just looks beefier!!

Wow, based on this it looks like mine is a 1st Gen..
I'm very happy with the leather sheath it came with as well. It really compliments the "field and fish", or perhaps "Filson vest" nature that I keep this knife for. Not that it isn't suited for "5.11 vest" duty... :) .
If I were using it in a combat capacity I would definitely prefer the Kydex/cordura combo. Same for damp environments like the pacific northwest/ Latin America/ SE Asia... For tactical/police/swat I suppose Kydex and teklok would be my recommendation.

Mine is also 1st gen since I got in 2002. I'm not a big fan of choils, not for that size blade.

I just got it back from my wife who had been using it in the kitchen for a couple of years. Of course this was after she proclaimed the Bog Dog her newest favorite kitchen knife. Took her a year or so of side by side to come to this conclusion. LOL

THEN, sticker shock! I was thinking about snagging another HR just to stick back. I hadn't really been following the secondary market at all. My first 3, HR, CT and BR all from 2002 were working just fine and I was busy buying Busse. They still are working just fine.

WOW !!!!!

Guess I'll have to wait for the new HR to debut. I do like the smaller choil, but will miss the Res-C.

Not that I dislike Micarta, but the Res-C seems to work better wet, covered in blood or fat.

SR-101 and Res-C=some of the best working knives around.
