Hey guys and gals! I am looking to purchase/commission a skinning knife for my father-in-law but I dont know much about what makes a great skinning knife. Please help with any feedback. I am a knife nut but my interest is in bushcraft knives so this is out of my realm of knowledge. Any info regarding the necessity of gut hooks, steel, handle material, blade width, profile And any other aspect is welcome!

I am looking for recommendations as well.

My price range is somewhere around $100. He hunts white tail deer.

This knife will not be used for any camp chores, processing wood, or EDC. He has medium sized hands.

Thanks very much for your time!

Sharp finger or custom sharp finger variation is my recommendation by far.

I have no experience with a gut hook or a need for one. I prefer a decent steel that is easy to touch up and keep sharp as oppose to a super steel but I'm sure others can give you more technical advice.

I'd say see if you can find any info on what he uses and prefers. You can get lots of opinions and suggestions from everyone but
he probably wont want to change it up too drastically if he has been at it a while

Might have better luck posting in the hunting subforum
