Well I got a leek about 3 months ago and I love it, but I notice it has lost its sharpness that it had at first. What do I need to sharpen it, and how do I do it correctly?

Research the forums, there are tons of sharpening instructions to be found. You can also check out this site to learn the basics. http://users.ameritech.net/knives/index.htm
Learning to do it yourself is easy and of great benefit. Once you get it sharp you can keep it that way by touching it up after every use or so. That way you will always have a sharp tool. If I can't shave body hair with it I don't EDC it. I am probably not too far from you. If you get really desperate PM me and we will work out a way to get it to me or for me to show you how to do it.

I'm one of those guys who believes that a guy shouldn't own a knife that he can't sharpen himself. If you can't sharpen your own knife (especially one as simple to sharpen as a Leek), then please send it to me, and I'll keep it, and keep it sharp.

Thanks for the Leek, in advance!.:D.

I use the DMT aligner kit. But I do think it would be beneficial to learn to free hand 1st.
As posted above, there are some places here in the forums with great tips as well as using google.
If you have a friend that is really good at free hand sharpening, ask for there help. Having someone
with you to show you the ins and outs would be the best way to go IMHO.

To the guy telling me I should send him my leek you can wait by your mailbox forever man, cuz I'm never sending it, and don't automatically think I can't sharp any type of knife, I just made this thread to make sure there wasn't a special way to sharpen such a nice brand of knife of mine so I wouldn't screw it up. I was in the boy scouts, I know how to sharpen a knife, I just didn't think I could get that sharp of an edge that my leek came in from the company from how I was taught to sharpen...

I know how to use the sharpening rock and the then sharpen the knife by using a 45 degree angle.

I just wanna know if some people on here prefer to use a 30 degree angle or what not...

We're just here to help Buddha. Just looking at your 1st post it appeared that you didn't know how. Sorry if my reply offended you. It was not my intention.
Have a great day. :)

I guess you'll have to learn not to take me the wrong way...I like to joke around alittle. I didn't mean to insult you. I'm sorry if I came across that way.:o.

As far as sharpening goes, I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker and it works pretty well, and is almost foolproof with a straight blade like the leek. I also have a pair of the Spyderco Benchstones (they are made out of the same material as the Sharpmaker), and I really prefer free-hand, as you can get to "feel" the edge, and adjust your sharpening angle to match the knife's possible use.

BTW...I was also a Boy Scout, but only made it up to Life Scout.

Do you measure the angle per side or as a total of the angles for both sides? If you are sharpening each side to 30 degrees then you may want to go lower. My Leek works very well and holds a good edge at around 17 degrees per side. It is a 440A blade and works very well. Your newer one has a superior steel and should be even better. The secret to any knives edge is to touch it up as needed to keep it razor sharp. If my knives won't cut it was because I had to use them real hard to get the job done. They will never get dull with normal use due to being touched up when needed.

+1 on the sharpmaker.
