I need only one good knife...

Hi Guys,

I have lurked around this forum for quite some time now and have always admired the knowledge base a professionalism within its pages (as well as the sense of community) I have a question, and I know its kind of a dumb one but I would really appreciate any feedback.

I have collected swords and knives for a few years now, and have spent a good deal of time and money on this hobby. Recently, when I looked at all the swords and knives languishing around, doing nothing and rarely even picked up...I decided that having a bunch of things just really isn't my style. I have decided that I only want one or two swords that I can count on, that are the toughest and best designed for their job- the closest to indestructable I can find- and I don't care at all about fancy fittings or materials- just a tough, well balanced blade. In the world of knives it seems the general word for the toughest is INFI...but there are also other makers who I am hearing alot about, such as Fehrman knives...what do you guys suggest for the toughest, most functional knife available, custom or otherwise?

Matt, you are quite correct. You only need a few good blades so I will gladly take all your extras from you.

Get yourself a Hossom in 3V/154CM Devin Thomas damascus. Extremely tough, functional, and well-balanced.

Actually, beyond the Busse combat fans, you may have a hard time finding anyone who has heard of INFI. I'm not saying it's a bad steel, as I've never used it, but it is not necessarily known as the toughest steel. I would say 3V has a good reputation for toughness, with some excellent edge holding to back it up, but I don't know how much you care about whether it is stainless or not. And like SteelDriver said, if you could get a Hossom with the 3V/154-CM, that would be an excellent blade.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask "count on" for what? Are you getting into a lot of duels lately?

You need to be more specific with your intended use for the "one" knife.

Oh ya, there is no such thing as a single "do it all" knife....you're best to keep a few that are best for their intended use and within your acceptable price range.

I've been searching for the best knife/knives since I first became interested in them over 25 years ago...and I'm still looking!

For the "one" knife, Benchmade Nimravus in M2 fits the bill quite well for me, provided that it is legal to carry a 4.5 inches fixed blade anywhere in the world. Too bad that's not the case. That said, even though I am also leaning toward the one knife, keep only the essential idea, in reality I have no choice but have to team up the Nimme with some other blades in different lengths, to see when to carry which. I know this is a win-win situation for some of us in here. :D

Hi Matt

I used to live in Gainesville years ago, but lost my senses and moved back to Ft. Lauderdale. I know, what was I thinking?

I don't know squat about swords except the few that Busse made a few years back (A2) and looking at Rob Criswells, also A2. I do EDC Busse blades along with a Sebbie (CCW's are a wonderful thing), and INFI is everything it's cracked up to be and then some. The question is what do you want the knife for (use)? I have more than a few big Busses, but they mostly sit in the safe just because they are too big to carry concealed. Nice for when I'm out in the Everglades, but I'm at work more than in the swamp. What gets carried is a rotation of 3 1/2 to 5 1/2" blades with the 5 1/2" about the largest I can comfortably conceal.

I doubt if 1 knife would 'do it all' for you, but a big and smaller combo works out really well. Good luck in your hunt.

I hear those "Hatori Hanzo's" are supposed to be pretty good. :D :D

I didn't mean for my "one good sword" comment to be taken that way. I often think in terms of what the sword or knife is capable of, a romantic notion I guess, not that it will really ever have to perform. I think many sword collectors may think in these terms, as even the most beloved and eagerly anticipated custom will eventually be relegated to a case or corner, rarely even handled. With knives, I feel a bit better about spending the money, because knives generally can actually see use, even heavy use. Recently I have come to the (though somehwhat unusual) opinion that I don't care in the slightest what a sword or knife looks like or how elaborate it is, only that the blade is the best it can be...

Best it can be at slicing cheese? Fighting off some baddies wanting to do you in? Opening cardboard boxes? You need to define your use, then you can decide what you want.

I think you can find a knife that will slice cheese, bad guys, and cardboard boxes.
You might want to wipe it off between jobs.

Lol, good one Mr.Badexample. Very true though
I don't know pretty much anything about knives but how about a knife in the SOG range? Lol.
