I'm trying to put a chisel grind on the sheepsfoot blade of a slipjoint. Am I correct that I need to make the angle half of what I normally would, because only one side of the blade is beveled? If so, does anybody know of a simple way to help set such a small angle? I have a bunch a various sized benchstones, a Lansky and a SharpMaker 204.

Help!!!!!!!!:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

For a true chisel grind, you make the angle on the ground side exactly what it would be on a regular grind. So you can still use the 30- or 40-degree rods of your Sharpmaker 204. There are no changes yet.

You want to sharpen on the ground side only and raise a burr on the opposite side. Then you have three options:

  • If you don't care about blade scratches, lay the flat side of the blade flat against a stone and gently drag across to remove the burr;
  • If you do care about blade scratches, very lightly remove the burr with the 30-degree setting;
  • Alternatively, you can strop off the burr.

Of course, the 30-degree setting on a Sharpmaker is 30 degrees because each rod is at 15. So on a true chisel grind, using this setting will give you a 15-degree edge. So you might want to stick with 40 on the ground side.
