I'm looking for a new EDC. Up until now I've carried a BM 720 but my wife has offered to buy me a new knife for Christmas (How lucky am I:D :D :D? I feel like a dog with two tails).

Anyway I've narrowed my choice down to three knives, but now I'm really stuck, I just don't know which one to choose. The three prospective knives are:-

1. Benchmade 940.
2. Benchmade AFCK.
3. Al Mar Sere 2000.

Please let me know which of these you like the most, but most importantly... WHY you like it.

Oh! and before anyone suggests it, NO I can't get all three. :grumpy:

Of those three the AFCK is the only one I've ever used, but I've use dit a lot.

The AFCK is definately one of the best designs out there. There are a few things I'd change a bout it, but it comes about as close to perfect as almost any knife out ther for SD EDC.

PS - I carried an AFCK of one type or another for years. I just switched to a Spyderco Military PE S30V, if you're considering other suggestions...

I agree with john, you can't beat an AFCK. I'd go with the axis version with d2 steel (806d2).
You really can't get hurt with any of the 3 you listed, all great knives. Just a matter of personal prefference.

It depends on what you are going to use it for. I carry a 943 and it has become one of my favorite all time EDC's. The knife is the perfect size for me, very, very smooth opening, and of course it has the AXIS lock. The AFCK would be a great choice for an EDC but you have to consider the size, it has a 4" blade and is over 9" open. The 94x has a 3.4" blade and might be more suitable for office situations and general sheeple encounters.

I guess my suggestion would be for a 94x series knife, it is a great design and will perform great in most situations.

I'd say that it depends on whether you use your EDC for moderate use or heavier use. If it's just moderate, day-to-day stuff, I'd say go with a BM 94X. Between the 942 and the 943 (I like black handles), I'd choose the 943, as I like clip-points/bowies for the capability of doing point-work. If your EDCs see heavy use (which looks like what you might have chosen the BM 720 for), then I'd say go with the BM 806D2 AFCK. It weighs only 0.1 oz more than the 720, so you won't be seeing much of a weight difference in your carry.

Personally, I'd choose the AXIS-lock/D2 AFCK, for a few reasons:

1. Clip-point for point-work.
2. Nice big finger choil.
3. Good steel.
4. Same weight as your 720.
5. Thumbhole instead of a thumbstud.

While you'd have to adjust to a bit bigger size knife, remember that "You can make a small cut with a big knife, but you can't make a big cut with a small knife." I think somebody has that in their sig around here.

I've owned all three, and while the 940 and SERE 2000 are really, really nice knives, I'd take the AFCK because it's (at least for me) the ultimate production "tac" folder.

I'm surprised glockman99 hasn't come out to say something about the Sere2k...

i've got that on order at the moment...i've not heard one bad review about the sere2k...

but since you're used to the axis-lock you might want to get the afck...

i think all the knives you mentioned are excellent knives and in the end you'd have to base your choice on looks...which one looks best to you...and get that one...

you can always get the others later on...hehehe

AFCK has to be my choice (with AXIS lock definitely, with D2 if you can). This has to be one of the best designs for fighting that allows a wide rang of utility. Blade holes are my overall favorite opening device as well, so that's a plus.

I have no experience with the BM 940, or the SERE 2K. I do like the design of the SERE very much, and have held them at shows, but I tend to go with the AXIS lock whenever it is an option.

I'm in the same boat so I splurged and orderd a BM806D2 and an Al Mar Sere 2000. :D I can tell you now I believe the BM806D2 with the Axis lock will be a stronger lock, but I hear the Al Mar is a solid feeling knife and after hearing so much praise about it I had to see what it's all about. :) I'm pretty sure the 806 will become my new EDC. I will probably retire the BM710HSSR for awhile. A 94x series knife is on my list, but there is something about it that doesn't do it for me at the moment. Although I must say I liked the titanium handled version and I think it may have had s30v steel. Anyone know if BM will release a model like that again?

Thank you gentlemen for all your help and advice. You have managed to help me choose.

I'm going to go for the Benchmade AFCK 806D2. I like the Axis lock and D2 is a mighty fine blade steel. I also like the blade size and shape and as I work outdoors in the wilds and this knife is going to become my EDC I need something nice and strong so I think the AFCK may fit the bill.

Thanks again,

Tony.

owners of the bm afck 806d2 - do you have any problems with lateral blade play? i was considering getting one of these so i don't have to beat up my customs. i checked one out at a local shop, and it had quite a bit of lateral blade play (perhaps cuz it was the floor model that had been handled a lot??). owners please holler back.

tony - from a looks standpoint, the afck is nice & mean :D

Tony - Let us know what you think of it once you get it. I'll have mine Christmas morning. I might have to get up early this Christmas. :)
