Hello everyone, I have come to this sub forum to ask for some help in finding "MY" perfect axe/hawk. I have searched for quit some time now but have had no luck finding it. What I'm looking for is small hawk type head with a long(ish) 30" heft. I would like the head to be in the 1-1 1/2aLb range with a hammer pole. And a heft with the curves of a full size felling axe (but with a thinner diameter if that makes any sense).

My reasoning behind this is (and I do not have much experience with an axe) that a small head with a longer heft will be. A) safer for someone with only wood splitting experience.

And B) will be lighter for packing on a bag
wen camping,hiking ect.

And finally C) the leverage of the longer heft will help it's chopping capabilities with it having such a small head.

This axe/hawk will be used for shelter building, small wood splitting , camp tasks and some bush craft. So if anyone can point me in the direction of a custom maker, or a production company I would appreciate it.

Thanks everyone.

I don't quite follow - by design, a hawk requires a straight haft as it's slipped onto the handle from the butt end and held in place by the thickening out of the end of the haft. A curved haft is pretty much reserved for traditional axes where-in the head is mounted from the top and held in place with a wedge.

Personally, 1-1.5lbs sounds WAY too light for a 30inch handle in my opinion. At some point, the advantage of leverage is going to stop lending itself to the axe's performance unless the added length is balanced out with a heavier head...

That said, why not just pick up a CS trail or pipe hawk and make a 30" handle for it yourself? It'll be good experience, give you an idea of the practicality of such a tool and also help you decide whether you want to invest more into having something custom made.

Yeah sorry for any confusion that's why I said axe/hawk. I know it's not really a hawk or an axe. But what I was wanting to so is but a hawk "sized" head on a modified axe handle.

On the wight of the head. I could go up to 2LB but the whole point of this was to keep wight down but still maintaining some of the qualities of a larger axe.

As for making my own heft...ERR..I could try but I'm not the handiest Guy. I will look into it tho.

For now if anyone has any suggestions let me know thanks.

Look at the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk.

Bit heavier than what you originally said, but it has a longer edge than most hawks, a hammer poll, and it comes with a 22" haft. If that's not enough, the one I bought fit nicely on a Cold Steel 30" War Hammer haft with minimal sanding..

If you're willing, you could draw out a sketch of what you want, head-wise and see what it would take for one of the custom makers to make you one.

I bought one of these some time ago, when I’m up in the mountains iv put it through some tough jobs and its performed exceptionally. It’s a Winkles Knives II hunter’s axe. It is expensive, but worth every penny.
