I need some help from those of you who understand Spyderco blades...

This is my first post in this subforum -and I hope not to step on any toes...

So, through an ODD turn of events - I have ended up with 299.99 in credit at the Spyderco headquarters. I have to buy something through them at MSRP to get this money back.

Here is the thing. I am not a huge fan of Spyderco's blades. Nothing on Spyderco - what I have learned through this odd little trip is that Spyderco is a class act. They have taken care of me - but the blades are just not for me.

I cannot order a Bushcraft for reasons I would not like to discuss - but have 299.99 in MSRP to spend.

I would like to get a knife, sharpener, or something (maybe more than one of something) and sell it to recoup my original investment.

What sells quickly and retains its value if I had it new in box?

Dream up something and help me out if you could.

Thanks so much,

TF

Sage 2 is very desirable, as is the titanium-handled Military. A Civilian would hold value, and I know more than one person who would buy it from you.

I would suggest getting a Sharpmaker kit for sure. Handiest sharpening kit on the planet. I touched up my potato peeler this afternoon and was amazed (yet again) at how the performance of that little gadget was improved. The DVD that comes with the Sharpmaker is very informative and you quickly realize how many things you can sharpen and maintain with ease.

I'd also suggest getting a SWICK.

Yeah. A Sage two Titanium handled knife would do it.

What might not be a bad idea is a Sage and two double stuff's. I wouldn't mind keeping one of the double stuffs.

+1 on Sage 2 or Military. The Sharpmaker is great.

You may be making a huge mistake in getting any Spyderco knives, even just to re-sale. There have been many others like you who didn't care for Spyderco blades until they actually had one in their hand for a while.

Be very careful. Just like a powerful drug, a little taste of Spyderco and you may be hooked for life.

You could get all the doo-dads with the sharpmaker as well, like the diamond and extra fine rods. Maybe get a Salt knife, they're pretty unique.

How about the high rc ZDP-189 mule since msrp or not, you cant get it anywhere else. They are gonna be taken off soon for reheat treatment though.
$300 store credit just sitting there with Spyderco... it'd drive me nuts!

I would wait and get the Titanium Military. Should be right about $299.

Civilian is another good choice.

If it is for resale, get something you can only get from the Spyderco company store. MSRP is (at least 25%) higher than what their knives generally sell for. This would translate into a loss for you.

The mentioned Spyderco Mule or Swick knives are a good place to start. Other than that, maybe get something you would like to keep, like sharpening gear.

Unless you have a lot of experience with Spyderco products in the past, or you only buy custom knives, you may actually like a few of their knives once you start using them.

I agree with getting something you can only get at spyderco and the only thing I know of is the mule. I would get some of those in ZDP, probably after the new heat treat, and sell them once they are sold out. The mules seem to demand about 25% more than what they sold for at spyderco so you might even make some money.

I think you're overlooking the fact that, as you observed, most dealers do sell Spydercos at a discount. That means the OP received MSRP credit for a knife which he probably purchased for substantially less. That's why credits can only be used at SFO. If it were otherwise, some of our less scrupulous brethren would be buying knives just to return them.

As for the Mules, I think that's bad advice at the moment. The ZDP ones currently for sale are still the original hardness. Some folks experienced problems with them because of that, so they're going to be heat treated again to a lower hardness. They're only for sale at the moment because a few of the more die-hard and less risk averse "steel junkies" expressed an interest in purchasing them at the original hardness. If the OP did want to buy Mules, he'd be better advised to wait until they've been re-treated and put back on sale in January or February.

Or half of each, I'm sure the original hardness Mules will be faily easy to offload on that auction site, as long as it is mentioned what they are?
