im lookin for a good huntin knife. i have some in mind but have some reservations about them. generally i like my huntin knives relativly small (blade about 3.5-4'' or so)

anyhow, i dont generally like stainless blades. (the kershaw whirlwind i have doesnt hold an edge very long and i hear this is common with stainless blades?) is it true that stainless wont hold an edge as long as high carbon steel? (im new to the intricacies of knives)

i love the way the Boker INTEGRAL I

looks but once again, i worry about stainless and keeping a good edge. i am very fond of hunting knives with this profile blade.

i also like the CRKT M18 but have the same problem i did with their M16, i hate the lanyard loop or whatever it is, it gets in the way when i open the knife like i am used to doing.

i could change how i open knives but why.

i also looked at the kershaw/ken onion boa,

i like the profile of this blade. would prefer it fixed though.

any help choosing a good blade would be GREATLY appreciated. im looking at a price range under about $150 or so but will always consider some others.

i am fond of drop point blades as well as the profile much like the M18 with the blade curving slightly forward (recurve i think you call it). i would prefer a fixed blade but dont have to have it that way. i love the quick action of my whirlwind but dont think it is that important in a hunting knife.

custom, semi custom or production any will happily be considered ever if what you have in mind is above my specified price, its not completly set. :)
thanks in advance

Check out the various offerings from Bob Dozier (www.dozierknives.com)

Bob uses D2 steel (not quite stainless) and is considered the master of that steel. His knives are in your price range and are considered to be among the best out there.

Good luck and welcome to the Forums.:)

A Cold Steel Master Hunter might work well for you, and I think I saw a "used" one listed for sale here at the "For Sale forums" not too long ago.

very nice indeed, but the only one that i feel fits my needs would be this one

Dozier reverse tanto blade.

i think the more i look for this knife the more i want a blade with more of a recurve profile.

plus as i said, id like to top out the blade on this knife at about 4'' or so. not much more, less (like 3.25'' etc) is ok too.

thanks again

I know and love the shape myself. I have a couple of recommendations for you.

This piece is from A.G. Russell and has the shape you know and love with a sweet looking damascus blade and a handle material that complements the blade very nicely. I have a damascus hunting knife myself, and can say that you would be reliably served by one. You also look like the alpha male at hunting camp when you unleash it. ;)

Secondly, I would recommend this one is from A.G. as well. It has the Quince burl handle and ATS-34 stainless. Very nice indeed.

Custom-wise, I gotta say either this one or this on here both from the MAN, Bob Dozier would make you stop buying hunting knives for the rest of your days. If you are concerned about stainless steel not holding the edge you need, get a piece of D2 from Bob and you ain't never gonna wonder again.

All of these knives are around the $150 ball park you mentioned, and would most definitely be worth the money you invest. Happy looking, and I hope you find a knife you like.

fixed blade somewhat like this...

i LOVE the Dozier Master Skinner and this will probably be the one i choose, but if anyone makes a knife with a more aggressive forward curve i will consider it...

anyone?

If you really want a small recurve fixed blade why not talk with some custome makers? I am sure you will be able to find someone to make you exactly what you want, but you might have to pay a little more than for a production piece.

i suppose i could.

who do you think would do a good job for this kind of knife?

hey Erik, i like your name, dont meet many of us that spell it the right way...

thanks again fellas
